I have an older Leupold VXIII 3.5-10x40 scope that I suspect may have a major issue., It is an older scope. Was also called "tactical" model/ It has the marking on scope. Gold ring is blacked out, It has tower type target adjustment knobs. I have it on an as new Lee Enfield Fazakerley No4 MK2 rifle. The rifle is new. I bought two, kept one unfired and got a non alteration scope mount put on the other one. at first I was getting 1.5-2" 100yd 5 shot groups with most loads .Suddenly there are wide fluctuations in elevation impacts ( as in 1 foot!!!). At first I thought it was the nut behind the trigger. So today I started out at 40 yds and moved out to 100yds. I would get 2 shots virtually touching then the next shot 10" high or low. Windage did not vary much at all. This was seen with my reloads (previously accurate loads),PRIVI ball, Remington ball and Greek surplus. I have never been a big fan of Lee Enfield and wanted to blame the rifle . I am perplexed as to how a scope dysfunction could give such wide variations in elevation but very minimal change in windage.
I am going to try a different scope, but after burning 60rds of ammunition ,I am not enthusiastic.Same day I got consistent 1.5" , 5 shot , 100yd receiver sight groups with a 60 year old Marlin 336( 35 Remington carbine).
