Very Old 4831

I used the ‘43 powder in commercial .308W brass with relatively current production LR primers. Not sure what I will do with the corrosively primed ’43 brass.

I still have a partial 1 lb. tin of H4831 that I purchased in 1971. Still has the price tag: $2.79! It's marked "This is WWII surplus powder, storage life is not guaranteed".

Still works quite well in my .270 Win too.

I inherited some of the old 4831 from my dad and decided to test it against current powders and my results were same speed and accuracy. I know it's supposed to be slower but, not for me. test rifle was a .284 shehane. 56 grains produce 2782 fps with a 180gr berger. Same speed with h4831sc or h4831. I thought the crony was broken, but I checked it against other rifles. I did not test against IMR4831, I will do that next time I feel like some shoulder punishment, when you shoot vartargs, 20tac's dashers and 6.5 creedmore's, the shehane has more recoil than I am used to. My dad and his friend bought a large size of it and put it into old plastic jugs which were falling apart when I got it, but it shoots great.

I probably have some 25-06 ammo loaded with that surplus 4831. It was the 'standard' for 06, 270 and 25-06. I was loading it my 25-06, '61 Lake City match brass and Sierra bullets for rock chucks and Noslers for deer. Components were always available. The good old days, we could load 100 rounds for about $7 or $8 bucks. I shot rock chucks in a alfalfa field, now a subdivision. The chucks are probably gone, I wonder if the rattlers left. Good memories.
