Varminting in the UK

Hi guys been looking in on this fantastic site over the last few years and not posted.
So here goes.
In the UK we love our varminting as much as you do but it takes different forms.
Just thought you may like to take a look.

We have been taking a few video clips just for a bit of fun.
We hunt rabbits, pigeons and crows at long range. At the moment I'm using a Kelbly in 6.5-284 and an RPA Quadlite in 6mmHot.
Both rifles are very effective the 6.5-284 getting me into your Varmint Hunters 500 yard club last summer with a 631 yard shot on a crow.
Cheers
Dave

Hey Guy,

Way to make use of available targets..

Could you expound on hunting land access? Have heard all land in the UK is tied up in private hands? Or do you have 'public' hunting areas? Just curious.

Thanks for sharing.

Nodak

All land in the UK is privately owned so sadly no public hunting land.
I'm lucky that I have access to plenty of private land, but some people do find getting access very difficult.

Cheers Garyw, I'm from Swansea South Wales.
The 6BR is a great cartridge, mines going in for a new tube this weekend.
Shot loads with her and the barrel finnally died after 4000+ rounds.
What twist is your BR?
Cheers

6mmhot.
rifle is a cooper m22 varminter 1-8twist very accurate gun.just put a deposit on a nesika-j in 22br lazzaroni stock kreiger bbl.should pick it up as soon as my fac variation comes back.

Sounds good Gary, my 6 BR just loves 87 Vmax, I just hope the new tube will.
That .22BR sounds very interesting and the Nesika action is superb. What twist is she and what bullets are you hoping to run?
Have fun
Dave

That brings back some good memories of my younger days. My first high power rifle was a unissued Remington made 1903A3 Springfield military rifle that at age 13 I mowed yards all summer to make the $40.00 it cost. I learned to really shoot with that rifle shooting rabbets, groundhogs, crows and a few feral dogs at ranges as far away as I could see them, average 100 to 300 yards, with the open peep sights on that rifle. I did my shooting in some big rolling pasture fields and from one hill top across to the other across valleys in the mountains of Tennessee USA. Sorry to see that most of these places are full of houses today. I wish I had the eyesight I had back then to be able to use open sights like that now.

Wow must a hoot to be able to shoot bunnies at that distance.

Here in Ontario Canada if you shoot rabbits you better take them home and eat them. Just to use them as target practice will land you a fine and maybe loose your rifle and hunting previlege.

JonnyB,
Good thing I live in Australia and not Ontario, we shot 110 rabbits two weekends ago and only bothered to bring four home. :)

Hey foxhunter

Nice to hear from Australia. I live in Northern Ontario and our rabbits aren't very big their called cottentail and in southern Ontario we have bigger ones their called jackrabbits.

We can only hunt them in the Fall and we have limits on how many we can shoot per day I think its 5 but cant be sure. I personaly dont eat rabbits not because their cute. I not much into wild meat, only thing I hunt is moose and I dont do that to often.

Were allowed to shoot groundhog and coyote but only in farmers field and with their permission.

In the winter not much to hunt and there's too much snow to be walking in the bush.

6mmHot,
That was a great idea to take a video camera along, we will have to try that next time we get away. All I need is someone who knows how to use a video camera and we will be set to go.

I must say you use a lot of rifle for rabbits, I thought a 6mm PPC that I use was a bit over the top but a 6.5-284 :thumb:

JonnyB,
Our rabbits are exactly the same sort as 6mmHot shoots as the first rabbits came out to Australia with the First Fleet in 1788.

On that particular weekend we actually went to take out as many foxes as we could because the sheep farmers lose quite a lot of new born lambs to foxes each year. But there were so many rabbits we could not resist to take a few out. But we will go back before winter and sort out the foxes before the ewes start to lamb.

I know, but it was fun.
A friend is in the process of getting a 6.5-284 and wanted to try one out. 140 Amax certainly toss things about.
My more usual caliber for long range bunnies is a 6BR or a .22-250 Ackley improved.
Loads of fun trying to hit these small targets at distance. We are trying to get it on DVD to make up a short film.
Cheers
