Varmint scope question?

Phil

Gold $$ Contributor
6 Dasher, 14 twist, 55gr. Noslers in the neighborhood of 4000fps. 20moa. bases

What power scope should i be looking at????

I want enough adjustability(moa) in the scope and magnification, but i realize this combo will have it`s limits and not need a 42X scope...

I`m thinking in the 22-25 range.......

Also, what do you think my effective range will be with these light bullets????

P.S....It`s just a gopher gun...

Phil , a 6-24X or 8-32X should work . Depends on a lot of factors : your Vision , Heat waves , Reticle , size of the Varmint , type of Rest you use , etc . Pdogs and Gophers are pretty thin . A fixed 16X is good to about 500 Yards on Pdogs ...at least for my eye , and that's using a fine Reticle . Early morning and towards evening where its relatively dry , you can go a lot higher than 16X . If it's hot and Humid , 24X will drive you crazy even though I know some Pa. 1000 yard BenchRest guys use 50X . Your outfit using those light Bullets should be fine out to roughly 600 or 700 yards IF you can read the wind .

I ran 6.5-20's for years on prairie dogs, but found I was on around 14-16x for the best compromise on field of view vs power vs mirage etc.

I now run all 4.5-14x40 LR Leupolds with the Varmint Hunter reticle.

I found that spending 8 to 10 hours in p-dog towns will lead to a lot of eye strain if you run your magnfication turned up high all the time. Like the above poster I prefer a setting of 10x to 14x for most shooting inside of 500yds. This will also allow you to better see your hits. All my scopes at variables the only time you'll see my scopes turned up above 14x is when I'm long range bombing out over 800yds or spotting for one of my buddies and the mirage will allow high magnification. Good glass is a must and your best served with a forgiving side focus as you'll be continually changing shooting distance. I own three 8-32x56 SIII with the 1/4" dot I've found that they get much more shooting time in the dog towns then my 10-50x60 SIII's because the smaller 1/8" dot tends to get lost. My Leupold's now spend most of their time in the gun safe.

I hunt sage rats which are about half the size of a prairie dog. I do fine with a couple 4.5-14x scopes. I have one Sightron 50mm w/o the adjustable objective and I actually like it the best cause I don't have to fiddle with the AO. On the other hand, I do like the 5-20x and 6-24x scopes I have for the really long shots. Can't use a high power if you don't have it, and you can always dial down if you want.
