Long range varmint scope choice

I tried a fixed 36x target scope on PD's and it was a MISERABLE experience for me. For fixed I'd be OK with 8x, 10x, or 12x. 36x you have bupkiss for FOV, can't relocate easily, mirage kicks your butt, and you get 'scope eye' quick.

FFP with 0.1 MOA subtension is too fine for me at my preferred zoom of 8x-12x in a darker background. OK in dried grass or light background.

0.125 MOA is better to my eyes.

Now for cranking up to 20x-24x the 0.1 MOA is just peachy.

Take a look thru a Vortex HS LR XLR MOA for longer range work where you plan on being between 16x-24x.

I just bought a Nightforce Br 12-42 for my 20-250.
I can turn down a high powered variable if need be, but 1000 yards is a long way and a ground hog or coyote's center mass is a pretty small target, especially at that distance.-Cam

Agree 100%. My first PD hunt years ago I took a 3-9, 6.5-20, and 36X scoped rifles. The 36X was almost useless in finding the target. The 6.5-20 seemed perfect to me.

Since then I have gravitated to Leupold 6.5-20 with VH reticle. For compensating for the wind on high volume shooting, it just works for me. I also have some 8.5-25 but rarely use them above 20X. Just too much mirage. I know you are shooting larger targets, further, at a much lower volume of shots.

I hope you have a really good range finder.

2K varmint shooting.............when it rains frogs...........

Too bad you are 3000 miles from me or we could probably agree on a bet. I did not say I had hit at 2k yet, mostly for lack of opps to place a critter at that distance. I have hit over 1500 but again only get so many chances to put a critter at the right place. I am retired and travel freely with first class equipment.

Would love to be able to show you, but in the meantime enjoy your 22/250, AR or whatever. If you have first class ELR rigs and want to go head to head here, as a qualifier, let me know.

Another faithful believer in the Sightron SIII scopes. I consider the 8-32X model about perfect for my uses, which are tiny sage rats out to about 500 yards. I tried last year using my 15-55X Nightforce and didn't like the 15X minimum, but had no objection to the 55X when needed.

Looking for another sage rat scope and the 10-50X SIII is the top contender right now. For the price, I don't think there is better value.

I have managed to get by with a Leupold vx3 6.5x20, good size for my 204 ruger, with hits out to 700yds. Past that, a 6x24 sightron with target dot out to about 1200. Any farther than that, I can't afford the glass!

I like Vortex PST's on my dog guns....6-24

almost always scope is set at 14-16x......all you need

mirage is always a problem with summer dogs
I have a Weaver KT-15 I've never used. Maybe I should give it a chance, but not the best glass.

The boosters work well if you follow their instructions to determine which one is best for your vision. I use one on a 36 weaver and it helps but for varmints I would look hard at the sightrons, they can be had fairly cheap used. Good luck.

I agree that they work. I ran one on a NF 12*42BR scope last year in UBR competitions. I do not think it gave me a full 30% boost, but it did work fine. No issues.

Another Sightron 8-32 fan here, esp 1/8 min clicks. Ghogs are my targets. I had to have a Nightforce 8-32 np2dd and it is very nice. At 600 yds there is a very slight bit of increased clarity thru the NF but not worth twice the price of the Sightron.

A 8.5x25x50mm Leupold is a darn nice scope. You can get the fine duplex, varmint hunters reticle or send it in and have a tmr or mil dot installed.

I really like my Sightron 8-32,its on my .284 win XP-100 and 1000 yard targets come in nice and clear. They have some nice reticle choices too.I would suggest looking at "The Big Supply Shop"they probably have the best prices on Sightron you will ever see on the net.Dean that is a smoking deal at Optics Planet, they also have free frt on that one too.
I usually check between those two sites, they are always worth a look.

I get dealer pricing on many of the upper end optics so it's about a 30-40% discount. That same sightron is 604.00. I have a little bit of price flexibility.

800.00 +/-
And do you have a preference of maximum objective lens size? I'm asking because I'm old school. Nothing larger than 40 mm on my hardware, but from what you've described you'll most likely be in the 50 mm size. And a 30 mm tube has legitimate advantages too. Good glass trumps magnification.

What is your 6-20 and 6-24? I'll admit I've wasted $ on optics in the past, but once I returned to my roots, no more. Are you going to be getting very many shots on Mr Wild E Coyote at that distance?
