going to be shopping for a new car shortly,and use it for varmint hunting, one thing i am looking for in the vehicle is ground clearance and cargo space with the rear seats folded down, and fuel economy,had a toyota Tacoma in mind, but no use for a truck, i bough my wife a new 2016 Subaru Forster and it is OK, but i had either the Subaru Outback in mind or the Honda CRV, leaning towards the Honda CRV, seems to have more room that the Outback and more HP, any thoughts on what i am after.

Some of these new Jeep SUV's look pretty tough and sexy these days. Look kind of speedy too.

I've been on the Jeep Cherokee's for several years now, and very happy with them. I don't get one till it's got a hundred thou on it so it's in my price range. They four wheel drive like a real one, and I've even stuffed an elk in the back of them a couple times. jd

i had a jeep cherokee in the late 90's good vehicle served me well. this time around looking for good fuel mileage. hoping to get in the 30mpg range, i get around 33mpg on my wife's forster, looking for some thoughts on the Subaru outback and the Honda CRV mainly.

Mine is an '03 Dodge Durango. 5.9L engine so 14 MPG puts a smile on my face. Folded down back seat with all my gear in it so all I have to do is grab ammo and rifle for range/hunting. It's our third vehicle as my truck stays loaded with my work equipment.

yes i am watching that one too, might be a bit smaller than the Outback or the CRV in the cargo area. i know the 2018 Rav is, maybe the 2019 will have more cargo area, waiting to see, thanks

One can buy an older model pretty cheap. Putting a new crate engine, rebuilding trans, differentials, transfer case, rebuilding front end, brakes, head and tail lights, and a complete paint job with minor body work to remove dents - then add new tires and a 2" lift kit will run around half the price of a new rig - and that is paying to have it all done. Just did this on my old 2001 Z-71 Suburban and now wish I hadn't bought the 2018 model to replace it. The older suburbans and trucks were more utilitarian than the new models and if to be used primarily for hunting - I think they are better in many ways, including the beefiness of construction where it counts.

looking for some thoughts on the Subaru outback and the Honda CRV mainly.

We were in the market for a new vehicle in 2015. Would up getting the wife a Subaru Outback, our first Subaru. Couldn't be happier with it. Straight city driving it gets about 28 mpg. On the highway driving it reasonably, it gets over 30 mpg unless fighting a headwind or doing the mountains.

Not over powered on I-70 going through the Rockies in CO, but with the paddle shifters, it does just fine. I'm surprised the Honda has more cargo space?

Toyota 4 runner, Jeep JK 4 door, Jeep Cherokee, Toyota Tacoma or Nissan Frontier with a truck cap. I have the 2014 frontier and its awesome. Best hunting vehicle ever.

lets start with some facts about the rav4.
it has a part time 4 wh drive system
it drives 2 wheels unless they slip then pick up 2 more...
this is how it works day in and day out.....really 2 wh drive
subaru drives all FOUR wh ALL the time.
in an auto about 90% frt/10% rear.
moves power if it see slippage.
add an limited slip diff, and it can drive with
THREE WHEELS SLIPPING.

needles to say i would suggest an outback, i have a 16 forester(for sale).
i just bought a 2018 ram 2500 promaster high roof 159" to cruise in.

i think you will find the ground clearance on the subarus is more also.
feel free to ask about subaru's i have owned over a dozen.
