Junk Each & Every Part. Of course Every thing made now is junk. When people ask us what new truck to buy we don't have a good answer for them.

I haven' bought a "factory new" vehicle since 1978. I just never got comfortable with that feeling of 5 or 10 thousand dollars flying out my ass when I drove off the lot.

And from what I hear of folks bitching about the new vehicles they've paid incredible money for, I think my track record for used stuff has been very good.

Another necessary component of my fleet management plan is knowing a very honest repair shop. That is a blessing from God, and these days, probably more important than a good doctor. jd

"a Hi-Lux model in the US" << that would be wonderful

I bought a new 2016 GMC Denali 3500 duramax and sold it in 2021 when used prices were insane, not considering replacement costs I made money on it. Sold it for $3k more than I paid for it new. That's an aside, I'd buy another one without a second thought, it or the Chevy 3500 duramax but a custom build as base as possible but with everything I want for pulling an RV. The difference between a Denali and a Pro is interior and while it's really nice it's not an extra $20k nice. That 2016 was a dream to pull with, 9% grade up or down, easy as pie.

All of the current 3 major manufacturers diesel pickup engines have major problems that are very expensive to repair. Probably due to trying to meet EPA mileage and pollution standards and some due to just poor design. You couldn't force one on me.

I bought a brand new, loaded Tacoma in April of '23. It was $48k. I saw John Deere Gators a month later for $41k. I have been around enough gators to know I wouldn't want one, and surely not as much as a stripped down brand new Tacoma. There is a reason Tacomas hold their value so well.

I love my '96 4Runner, just drove it from Idaho to Arizona and back 332,000 miles, and has almost no issues.

I'd take an older 4Runner or Tacoma over a Jeep any day!

My 92 Toyota had the front flaps ripped off 2 wks after I got it, replaced the bumper under warranty for rust. Had to pop the winch off before they'd do it. The rockers started showing rust at about 10 yrs, some on the fender well edges under extensions within a couple more, no fender liners on them back then. The 09 still has the original flaps on the front, rockers are in great shape, nothing showing around the fenders, few rock chips on the A pillars, showing a rusty colour now. I really can't complain, biggest rust spot is on the tailgate where I found out why you put the tailgate up when you have a trailer on, that I never bothered fixing as it was 6-7 yrs old when I did that. I do have a strip of 3M rock guard under the topper windows, dogs used to hang their paws out there. It's all discoloured and peeling now.

I would love to have a Land Cruiser 70 Crew Cab like what's sold in Australia.
I've been drooling since the Boss said they can import those little truck things the rest of the world gets. My new love is a Suzuki , cab over design, 1500cc, manual trans , 4x4 with a hi/lo transfer case!!! and 30 mpg. I'll throw my Jeep and SXS out the door.

You can order one of those Hilux P/Us right now from an after market dealer, they are $45,000 to $65,000 after they are brought up to DOT specs. I don't think you'll ever see them for under $25,000 by the time they are US street legal.

Honestly, I live in Indiana, and I can't remember the last time I saw a Toyota with any rust on it regardless of which vehicle platform you're talking about. Same for Honda's. I know when I was in high school (early 90s) the old Toyota trucks had a terrible rust problem, but anything built after 1990 seems to be impervious to rust, at least around here. I'm in central Indiana, and if you find a ford, Chevy, or Chrysler that's over 15 years old without any rust on it, its either from out of state or its spent most of its life in a garage. Its hard to find a truck over 15 years old that isn't completely rusted out. I'm pretty sure that Ford sprays their trucks down with saltwater and vinegar before they paint them just out of tradition......
Well I am recalling back when I ran a welding business
and I've welded everything from HEavy Equip Dozers etc down to .050 SS
---
One time I even reworked the whole front end of a Delorean that was made up to look like the back to the future car
Most of it was made out of 16 Ga (Thin, bent etc)
---
About 2008 a guy asks me if I can weld on his Toyota Fender because it was coming apart
I am used to older 70's Fords, I drive a '92 Dodge, so I said sure.
You can actually screw in a sheet metal screw into their steel and have it hold a mirror back on
---
That Toyota Tacoma fender was so thin from the factory I kept burning through even with tiny tack welds
I had to butter each side up with weld, then stitch each side back together very slowly
---
by comparison I had a '63 Ranchero that I poked a hole in the front fender at work by accident
took the fender off, pounded the steel back into shape, and zipped it up with a MIG
No issues and didnt have to baby it while welding.
---
There was no way doing that to the newer Toyota, it was like you could almost dent it with thumb pressure and lean on it.
But yeah I get it, they want them lighter plus going to half the thickness of metal also saves money right?
---
Another comparison to that
I was doing some backhoe work in the backyard and had the backhoe extended and didnt look and was backing up and the tractor stopped
I had hit my '75 Scout in the front end just above the grill
it barely dented the hood and completely stopped the tractor in low gear.
---
Just my experience
I'll keep the Old 70's -'90's trucks myself

About 2010 a student teacher gave my wife (she teaches elementary) a ride in her then new 2-Dr Wrangler. When she expressed interest in one, I wasted no time. I’d been told how unreliable they are, but they looked like fun so we bought a Sport. As it turned out, we were NOT plagued with problems. We both say what a feeling of freedom we feel when driving Wranglers. Is there any other vehicle you can remove the doors from? Maybe a Range Rover?

When the diesel power train was finally offered for the 2020 model year, I got one for myself. Wife now drives a 2024 with the turbo 2 liter. The 8-speed automatic is the first automatic transmission that doesn’t bug me. Both of these are fun to drive. I recommend the Rubicon models if for no other features, you can get the deepest gearing in them. I personally don’t like the taller gear ratios that can barely use top gear at 60mph. That might be different for someone regularity on the interstate.

l had a BRAIN damage attack last summer 2023. Traded my 2010 FJ on a new Chevy 1500 4WD crew cab.
l should have known something was up. The sales folks swarmed over my FJ. 10 yrs and near zero depreciation
should have lit up the ''DON'T DO IT'' sign in my damaged brain. 12k miles on the BLUE BLUNDER now.
It's left on the side of the road TWICE! Both required a tow to the Chebi dealer. I find myself wishing someone would steal IT! l told my woes to my druggest. She said, ''Be glad you don't own a JEEP". She does.

I hope you're wrong but I'm afraid that may be the case.

Yeah a person can get most anything they want from most anywhere, it's kind of a hassle but certainly doable.

My pickup is a 2006 Tundra double cab with 118k on it. Had a 1996 4Runner before that and loved it until someone decided to blow an intersection and hit right-front, it was fixed but never drove right IMO so replaced it with the pickup. That year range of 4Runner was wonderful and zero issues over those ten years. Those old FJ's (FJ4*) are tough as nails.
