Varget, 223 Rem & Hard Carbon - The Test

Haven't seen it available in Australia and I suspect if it does turn up it will be very expensive. I would like to give it a try though as the Iosso is a bit messy.

Here until recently, guess there's more supply on the way.

Jeff, I haven't had any luck removing carbon with anything but Montana Copper Killer and a brass brush and a lot of scrubbing.

Thanks mate. I'll keep an eye out. As suspected very expensive but if it works I'll happily pay.

Next time you get it clean, run a patch with lock ease thru it. Makes the next cleaning a breeze! Patched will always come out dark, but it's not fouling. Look up speedys cleaning regimen

I've looked around and it doesn't seem to be available in Oz unfortunately.

I had some reasonable good results with M-Pro7 carbon remover in my 6,5-284 ( it need a good thorough cleaning every 200 rounds ).
I usually give it 3 or 4 full treatments as per instructions and it have worked just fine, the ES's are dropping and accuracy are restored just fine after each treatment and it even removes the carbon left on the crown.
Have you looked with a Borescope to see whether your M-Pro7 cleaning is really removing that carbon in the first 1/4 of the barrel? Unless you Borescope you have no way of knowing it’s clean.

I shoot an AR15 a lot. I have always complained about the carbon build up on the bolt before and after the rings. It has always been a PITA to remove. A few months ago I tried this product that we have here in the states. It is called Shooters Choice, and listed as a military grade solvent, with no smell. Well it works for me, I just puts the parts of the BCG in a pan spray this on them and come back in about 15-20 minutes and wipe them off with a rag. The stuff just eats through the carbon on the bolts. I love it. I haven't looked down my barrels yet as I don't have a bore light. I also shoot Varget. But it seems to clean them was well by the way the patches look. I also use this on other guns with the same results. Trapguns and handguns. Hope you can get some to try!

I have always found Varget to be extremely clean in my .308 target rifle. Ever since I moved to Varget, cleaning the barrel is quite quick. Two Ballistol patches, a few passes with a new bronze bore brush and Ballistol and then patch clean.

Maybe .223 Rem chamber/throat design aggravates the conditions for carbon deposits...

G’day , from Mackay in QLD .
I’m interested in knowing now that you are getting back to bare metal , is there is a difference in accuracy/performance ?
Also how many fouling shots are required before it settles down ?
Anyway, good to see another Queenslander here .

I'm just down the road in the Beef Capital mate!

It's a factory barrel and it definately shoots better clean. Two shots seems to be enough to foul it in and shoot for score. Biggest thing is it starts forming a carbon ring pretty early and after 100 rounds I notice very slight pressure signs.

If it was a nice Maddco stainless match barrel I don't think it would matter so much.

I pretty much quit using brass ,or any brushes about 10 years ago. Just what I listed, verified with a borescope.

What all the cleaning opinions means to me....none of its great. So come up with something that is and....we shooters will make you rich, lol.
It's already out there, more than 1. But since they are labeled abrasive, a whole bunch of folks have piled the kindling around the stake and lit the fire.
