Used action values

How much do used custom actions generally depreciate in value?

On the one hand, assuming no abuse, I'm guessing it'd be rare for one to wear out in any appreciable way. On the other hand... it's not like they're *new* and you're the original owner. And there's usually a *reason* the previous owner is looking to sell...

Is it like a new car, where driving it off the lot used to knock an appreciable chunk off the (re)sale value?

How does that calculus change if the manufacturer has since discontinued or superceded that particular model?

Because I know someone will ask: ARC Archimedes.

Thanks

$1, Bob!

In all seriousness I would see what those have sold for on GB (completed listing with bids/sold) or see if you can find any sold ads; price accordingly.

I checked GB and couple other sites and sold my Blueprinted Remington 700 40x single CF action for $575, local sale.

I don't think these end up on GB very much, if ever. There are almost no historical listings on there that I can find.

I've found a number of listings on more specialized forums, like AS & SH... but many of those seem to have the final price removed, so less than helpful.

Which is why I was asking in more general terms, 'what determines the re-sale value?'

My first criteria on a used action is spare parts availability. Doubly so if it's no longer in production. If the mfg can still supply any spares you may need, buy them as soon as you get the action. Figuring the cost of the spares into what you pay for the action is a good guideline.

Good shootin' :) -Al

Haha now that Remington 700s are "collectibles" they are worth twice what they sold for new. I know there is a Remington 700 shortage. They only made about 100 million of them.
Yes they are collectables, but certain years of manufacturing put out crap!! Don't get me wrong, they will function for shooters that want to hear the BANG and/or put holes in old vehicles dumped in the creek bed!!! Those actions on a custom build can lead to undesirable results or more expense in correcting the problems associated with the lower quality production!! For making a custom 700, DO YOUR RESEARCH!! BUYER BEWARE!!! Certain serial number prefix letters are better than others for LR hunters or Target Shooters!!! If memory serves me right, no letter is good, "E" and "H" are the best!!!

Can someone please explain how something that they made for 70 years in millions and millions of mass quantities, and sold at Walmart at Rock bottom prices is a "collectible"?

It's gotten ridiculous now. Artificial shortages from "collectors". Give me a break.

There is no "shortage" of bolt gun actions in the market. Quite the contrary. There are more now than ever.

A lot of 700s were made long before Wal-Mart was started in Arkansas!! And, Wal-Mart bought 700 bleams!! Later, they purchase contracted for lower quality production runs!!! Now your catching on to what I stated!!!! BUYER BEWARE!!!

DO YOU GO TO GUN SHOWS?? I'm talking 1000 or more table shows!! Yes, the 700 bleams are there!! So are the abused 700s!! Collectors look at NIBs, Special models, low serial number (early production), and Remington Custom Shop rifles!!!

Yah, about 60 million I would guess.

There must be gun safes all over this country filled with Rem 700s no one is ever going to shoot.

I don't believe Remington sold Walmart "blems". They filled the contracts with product, same as any other company. This is just more market rumors so that the certain years are the "good ones" and these others are the "bad ones". Same rumors used by gun show dealers to raise prices on their junk to the level of "collectable". This has been used over and over.

There is no shortage of Remington 700s.

I was editing my previous post and added the Gun Show paragraph!! I have been to over a 100 gun shows (~45 years) that exceeded 1000 tables!! I look for those collectibles!! Just because millions are made, there are certain changes in detail in different models that occurred in time that everyone wants!! Supply and demand dictates the prices!! Certain models only had short runs (years), others had decades!!!

Ford made a lot of Fox body Mustangs. When I was in school, these, especially versions like the cheese grater 1988 GT with turbine wheels seemed grossly overdone, drawing more attention to themselves than I thought their underpinnings deserved, but time has worked a trick or two. More sophisticated but fragile cars long ago went to the shredder while the easy to maintain Fox body began to look more honest and true because of what followed it, than it did when new. Who would have thought their grade of vinyl and plastic wasn’t picked because it was cheap, but because it was durable.

I liked the ilk of the 928 in Risky Business ranging to the Ford Cosworth. I remember as a teen thinking someday even the IROC-Z Camaro 5.7 is going to be considered collectible despite being borderline “obnoxiously” styled, but - same story. Now, I like them a great deal more.

The 700 can wear a $3,500 scope in wartime and be this country’s tip of the spear for single shots that matter most, or it can be an SPS Walmart redtag special asked only to back up the close range deer gun in the mountain house.

As a collector, and investor in guns, you look for the flaws, the quality, the models, the number in those runs (year or years of production), and the low serial numbers or certain letter prefixes!! A bunch of collectors would gather at the local POP shop with the owner selectively stashing some of the rare trade ins!!! We use to laugh at the 700s sold at Wal-Mart in those days!!! Flaws like blond wood in a BDL stock, air bubbles or voids in the thick glossy coating, finger prints in the blueing, discolored blueing, jeweling, and light stamped checkering where the diamond points were irregular in shape (not pointy)!!!

I do not agree with that.

This thread is about CUSTOM actions, lets keep it on target.
Sorry, I was writing my post when you posted!! And yes, this thread did take a left turn!!

But, I will stand on my statement that certain production runs of 700 actions are much better than others for the LR shooter!!!!

You nailed!! The 700 SPS, a Mil Spec, action was tuned (near BLUE PRINTING) in the REM Custom Shop, just like all 40x were tuned in that shop!!!
