I have a simple question--Has anybody got any information ie. good/bad about the Barnard Action http://www.mastingunsmith.com.au/barnard.html

Sandy
Try the forum on www.long-range.com . Do a search on "Barnard" & it should turn up some stuff that might be of interest.

Do the search as Sandy suggested, I would also contact Keith Hills, gunsmith and 1000yd shooter in oz. I am putting together a 22 &6mm Dasher on a Barnard action and would recommend them in fact I can’t recall anybody being less than highly impressed with them, ask Keith about the True-Flite barrels as well as they are another good NZ made product. khgs@netspeed.com.au

After doing some research on the Barnard Action, I have decided that I'll give one a go. They have 3 types. Generally the 1000yd one is not to pretty to the eye, but the Remington style one isnt to bad? Waiting for a reply from distributer about which one will be better suited! Hopefully the "S" Model,,the Rem. style) will do the job!
I think it will be an excellent action for my 6mmBr!!
Will keep you all posted on the outcomes!
General info on Barnard.. New Zealand made... high success in Palmer and F-Class shooting...

I must admit I am little mystified just what it is that people find unattractive about the Barnard action? I have the latest model P and personally think it’s just as “pretty†as my 40x etc. Have a look at these sites and tell me what you think--

Paul... I have had a look at the different models in the Barnards and have decided on a "S" Model for my 6mm Br Lapua!!
It is the Remington style, takes remington compatible triggers, and looks pretty darn good! I will use Vee Block bedding for the Barnard, which will give all the stiffness I need for my 28 incher!!! Excellent!!
I have done heaps of research on them and are happy to give them a go. So your really happy with yours? I've got most of my information from Keith Hill, and have even asked him about building my gun.... No reply yet.... Most probably because of all the questions I asked........
He did send me a picture of a rifle he built... and yeah it looks good!!
Ok, would like to hear from you about your Barnard action.. Or anyone that is using one that is..

Hi Ackley, you’ve made a good choice. I’m still waiting on the gunsmith to do the metal work on mine. I went for the model P because of its larger diameter and superior rigidity. Barnards fitted a Remington style trigger hanger to my action as well.

Big Al
I recently had Alan Warner put together a large Barnard "P" Action for my 6BR 26" Kreiger SS Project with a Sitman prone Stock. First time out, the Barnard trigger had a bunch of creep and let-off and felt bad.But after it was actually adjusted, it's excellent. Steady diet of Sierra 107's & Varget with Norma Brass is producing nice, tight groups at 100 yards, and expect the same at 600 yards later in the fall.
You can get more popular and expensive than Barnard, and lots prettier, but I don't know if it'll be a better shooting action.

Thanks Big Al and Paul for the info! I may change my mind and go for the P Model if I can get the hanger put on for a jewel!
For attaching a base to the Barnard.... Is it the same as a Remington or is one needed to be custom fitted? Also, how did you go with the recoil lug on your actions if you didnt use a Vee Block Bedding system? I will be using the Vee Block Bedding System which uses a spigot for excellent bedding.
Big Al, what profile is your barrel?

My "Barnard P" action fits into the Sitman-Pillar Bedded Prone Stock very snugly. I believe I had the Warners include their recoil lug for it. My barrel is a Light Palma profile, as per Al Warners' recommendation. Between the fiberglass stock, Barnard "P" Action and Kreiger Barrel, it's a handful.
The Warners put together competitive rifles for some of the the top Palma shooters in the country. I believe Al is listed as a contributor or coach to the US Palma Team and is also a member of the U-S "F-Class" team competing in South Africa next year.
When somebody like Al or Dan Warner give advice, I listen! They're great guys too.

Here is the answer I got on scope mounts from Malcolm, the man who makes the actions:
Holes are standard M4 thread spaced .866" apart,say22.00mm) step over is 4.5" Spacing is used by Weaver. Step over is as Alan Warner who was the American Palma Armourer uses and is as per the Rem 700,but remember the 700 has a flattened off rear action body.) One piece bases are best.
Have a look at this thread below on recoil lugs:

With a Remington style trigger hanger, a Jewell is not a problem on the Model

On the Model "S", or the "P" for that matter I'm guessing of course that you can choose your porting configuration.
I want right hand bolt, left feed and right eject! Also, you say that the P Model if larger. Do any of you guys know the dimensions of both models?
How things are standing now for my 6mmBr are Barnard action, Pro Cal MBR Stock, jewell trigger and a New Zealand Trueflite barrel!Have ordered my Nightforce 12-42 NP R2 reticle.... EXCELLENT!

Sounds like a good rig, have a look at this site it gives the dimensions of both actions: http://www.mtguns.com/prod01.htm
You will also find info on the True-flite barrels.

The dimension I'm after is the O.D of the S Model? I'm just comparing the two Models P&S and at the moment are wondering the difference in the overall diameter. So Paul, what is your porting?

paul
I have the standard right port, I have a site with the dimensions but just can’t find it at the moment, and pretty sure the model S is the same diameter as Remington 1.35

If you want one with an ejector be sure to ask. In my experience the default configuration,of the "P" at any rate) is as a non-ejector.,Better integrity of bolt face, simpler to make, easier collection of brass, etc.)
