Used action values

I just bought a Panda F/Class action that was 11 years old. I paid what the seller paid for it new, back then, and was happy because that was a good bit less than they are now.

There are a few things that will wear in a custom action if it is fired a lot.

A good example would be a typical Short Range Benchrest Rifle used by a very active shooter.

The firing pin tip and hole. And of course, in due time, you might want to check the spring pressure.

You can gall the lugs on a custom just like a Factory offering.

But if taken care of, most custom actions will show very little wear over thousands of rounds.

Just an opinion, but I would say 20% reduction compared to the cost of a new action would be in line.

You nailed!! The 700 SPS, a Mil Spec, action was tuned (near BLUE PRINTING) in the REM Custom Shop, just like all 40x were tuned in that shop!!!
I‘m sorry, but I have to laugh at that.

I understand abusive or excessive use diminish the quality of the 3Fs (FORM, FIT, FUNCTION)!! I worked with cycle life in production machine parts and tooling and I was an ME in robotic machine design for a plant that made lead acid storage, nuclear backup, and emergency backup batteries (non automotive) that were shipped all around the World with the main head quarters in Japan and the US corporate office in Reading, PA!!

Think about this!!! Who made the Remington military sniper rifles and had to use mil specs for that contract!!! Police Specials have the same standards for SWAT!!!

And, the 40x was well within those specs!! All these bolts, receivers, and barrels are trued to each other!!! Is that not part of the main processes of Blue Printing!! It wasn't done on the production side of Remington, but in the Climate Controlled Environment of the Custom Shop!!

I believe he is saying that none of them have ever been trued in the custom shop, not that the SPS was. I think that is correct, no 40-X’s have had any surfaces reground before leaving. When I look at or measure all of mine, they do not show evidence of individualization, either bolts or actions.

Anything made in the Custom Shop were pulled selected receivers and bolts, touched up in precision made fixtures in a CC environment!! The 40x receiver is a selected 700 receiver without the 700 stampings machined in the C Shop!!! Same with the bolt!!

That makes sense, as well as they function. I have read differing accounts of what they did to the actions, quite a few saying nothing to the body, just ensuring the bolt knob wasn’t out of timing. I don’t pull barrels off that are good, but the ones I have are extremely similar. The only real difference I have seen is that some older actions are just slightly too small to accept other bolts than their own.

… I think we are combining PSS and SPS rifles. The PSS was the Police rifle that was very good. The SPS was the version to get for “donor” parts because it was the cheapest version that came with bottom metal, but had a bad stock and a weak coating.

Was it in the cam lock or the trans verse of the bolt?

I once bought a complete rifle with a Kodiak action for $800. I’ve seen similar rifles priced at $1500. You never know. Some guys think they have gold while other guys just want to get some of thier money back and a quick sale.
I try to wait for deals. The market fluctuates.
