UPS SHIPPING CHARGES

The lower is the only thing legally considered a firearm. You can get uppers shipped straight to your door. But in your example, it would be considered sending a firearm since you are shipping the lower as well.
My point was that lower is called An AR pistol. Does that mean the handgun rule applies? Although its a lower I bought and it says Multi. not a designated pistol platform. So under UPS rules does it have to go air next day That was my question.

A lower is niether a rifle nor a pistol unless it has been made into one. It is a firearm.

a lower is transferred as an “other”

usps does not allow shipments of concealable firearms, only rifles. Therefore a lower can not be shipped usps by an individual, as it is both conceivable and a firearm.

ups classifies *handguns* must be shipped air next day. They do not use the terminology “concealable firearm” a lower by itself is an Other not a handgun. Therefore, it does not have to be next day air, which is demanded for handguns not firearms in general.

20 years ago it was $90 dollars to ship a handgun to a gunsmith UPS
I remember when UPS instituted the "Overnight Air Only" for handguns. It was about 20 years ago. Before that, I could ship a handgun UPS Ground for about $15. When they first changed to the new policy, it cost about $25-30. Obviously it's gone up since then. A LOT.

Sorry, but not so. The serial numbered part, usually but not always the lower, is considered by the Feds to be a firearm. If it's for a long gun it doesn't have to go 2nd Day Air. If it's for a handgun it does.

Yes…. I replied to a comment about an AR lower.

as far as for long and handgun…. That’s what I said.

The reason is that the handguns are easily stolen from the much slower ground operations. I worked for UPS when this was implemented. UPS had a bunch of handguns stolen by an organized theft ring. This was UPS’s best solution at the time. It wasn’t a good idea IMO but that’s where the air only for handguns came from.
it was the ups people that were stealing them. So now you have to pay extra to make sure they dont steal them.

You guys may want to check out shipping through pirateship.com . They’re completely free, and give you access to the discounted commercial pricing the average person doesn’t know about, or can’t use. I wish I knew about them a whole lot sooner. I’ve bought USPS and UPS postage through them about 8 times now, all without issues.

I don't know when it happened, but FedEx will no longer accept firearms from anyone but an FFL. I thought we had a choice between UPS or Fedex (last time I shipped a gun was about 3 years ago); apparently it's just UPS now, unless you ship through an FFL. May have been this way for a while though.

Some dealers seem to have a discount through Stamps.Com etc. for even UPS with savings of mor than 50%. Used to only have to send a Pistol (from an FFL holder) by Second Day air for $35.00.

It hasn't been $25 to ship a handgun overnight for many years. Last time I shipped via UPS Next Day Air it cost me $70 and that was about 10 years ago.

Like others have mentioned, find an FFL that will ship it for you. Mine charges $25 with shipping.

USPS service wouldn't be any better(theft wise). The other day I sent a package, the postmaster and I had a discussion about the quality of the USPS insurance program. She 1. Didn't know that you will NOT be in contact with a person when dealing with a claim. 2. Didn't know the the USPS is subsidized by taxpayers. 3. She knows me, didn't know I have not recovered any money damaged shipments, her office is where items started/ended their unsuccessful trip.

It also depends on where you ship from. My last place i worked at shipped semi loads of stuff UPS every day. I sent in a 1911 to STI firearms from work overnight and it was around $25. Not more than that i know. I could send rifles in those cheap plastic an foam double rifle cases from walmart for $13 or so anywhere in the lower 48.
