Updated Group Knowledge on Annie Annealing Times

i found a thread on this topic that was last active in 2012 - maybe it’s time for some updated information.

I’m gonna start annealing soon with a standard power Annie with the water cooled coil. I’m not sure about the different coil spacings — narrower vs wider — a few others mentioned in the old thread from 2012. If somebody can tell me if the water coil is more like the narrow or the wide spacing, that would be appreciated. They sell a coil called the flux concentrator that maybe is the “narrower spacing” folks mentioned. If that’s right, then I think my water-cooled coil is more like the wider spacing that @normmatzen said was working well for him to anneal both the neck and shoulder at the same time.

To begin with, I will be annealing Peterson 6mm Creedmoor, Eagle Eye 260 Rem (seems similar to Lapua), and Lapua 338 LM. I saw some annealing times for Lapua 260 Rem in the old thread. Any experience with annealing times for the Peterson 6mm Creedmoor and Lapua 338 LM cases?

I know of only one size water cooled coil for the Annie.

The other coils are the type which are wound on a flux concentrating metal frame. See the website for the pictures.

I recommend placing the shoulder (that point where the taper meets the body) approximately in the vertical center of the coil for each case that you are annealing. You may have to move the case up or down to get the whole neck in there. If a little neck sticks up, it will get annealed, just watch it change color as it anneals.

I recommend you get some 750 degree Tempilac, and paint a stripe from the top of the neck to about 1/2 inch below the shoulder. Test times until you get the 750 temperature needed, a little below the shoulder. Annealing farther down does no good.

Here are the times I used on my annealer:

223 1.8 sec
22-250 2.7
30-06 1.8
7mm Mag 1.9
6mmBR 2.5
6ppc 2.0

Note it is not dependent on the size, it is dependent on the time and the location in the coil only.

You can take a look at my post:

For a simple way to set the height of the case in the coil, I recommend you use Norm Matzen's set-up. see post #43. It allows you to simply cut a rod for a new case. Remember it is being able to REPEAT the case LOCATION which is IMPORTANT, the time is repeatable in the Annie. Even if the case is not exactly centered in the coil, it is OK as long as it repeats, so you may use the same glass rod for more than one case.

Good luck on your annealing. The Annie is a great unit.
