Understanding Pressure

Great article, be a sticky!! This would be an excellent article for the daily bulletin too.

Enjoyed the article. You highlighted several variables that I have not considered. In particular the concern about solvents and oils in the chamber. I have spent a bunch of time trying to discern primer "flattening". Have never fully figured it out. My first 700 semi custom rifle, in retrospect, took me to the ragged edge with most loads. Took me a while to figure that out. Rookie mistake. It had excessive headspace to begin with and I was setting my shoulders back too far to compound the issue. Thanks!

Solid write up. Well done. Do you have a link to the story behind the bolt with the sheared off lugs? I'd love to see more about that. It seems like a very rare failure mode (by design).

Every time you over pressure that can happen. All depends on the metal and the heating treatment . Larry

A very worthwhile read. While brass gripping the chamber is important it seemed like they were almost implying the bolt doesn't bear any of that thrust responsibility. When I get hit from the Lapua or RUM I'm not thinking in my head "I hope there's no oil in the chamber". I think it will give you false pressure readings for sure but it seems to leave me with the notion that all that recoil is from brass gripping the walls.

That is the reasons for cross hatch in chambers not polished . Larry

. . . Just finished up an article that should help people gain a better understanding of the pressure at play in their firearms.

Let me know if you have any questions and I look forward to your comments!
Too often an otherwise useful and important article is spoiled by flat-out poor writing and grammatical errors . . . and is ignored. Not this time :) I was impressed by your smooth communication style as well as by the content. Well done, and thanks :)

With all due respect, that's ridiculous.
The why did my when I removed most the free bore from my 300 WBM Did my shells lock the bolt and blow primers ,. Even the factory did . Whe I increased it out the problem was gone
Every good reloading book warns you of the same problem. QL recommends to add 5000 pSi . Larry
