Two new scopes for long range.

I am testing two new scopes....one is a 8-40X 50mm Burris w/ 34mm maintube and the other is a 7-42X 56mm Leupold. The Burris is FFP reticle and the Leupold is SFP reticle. Both are MOA type reticles. James

I'm interested in the price of the Leupold and the results of your test. Look forward to hearing about both scopes.

Where do I apply for a job like that?

The crazy 1/8, 1/4 MOA adjustments on the Leupold rules it out for my use.

I'd use a 1/16 MOA if it was available.

I might have to back off on the 1/8-1/4 MOA thing. I read that somewhere, but can't find a definitive statement about it now. The Leupold site has a section that says "1/8 MOA Target" and after it "1/4 MOA Target", but there is no text in either section.

The range of adjustment is 45 MOA in one direction and 55 in the other. Neither close to the 70 MOA mentioned in the early press releases. Neither is the MSRP, but I didn't expect that to hold up.

GSVP I have one and its a nice scope, I used it last weekend and it seems to be all I need for 1000 yard shooting. Yes it has 45 MOA. windage with 1/4 min. clicks but didn't have any problem clicking right and left three targets over then coming back and braking a clay bird. The clicks were right on. And the 55 MOA. Elevation was no problem either, I had it on my LG. one day and HG. the next and there is three full turns different in the bases. I will be doing more testing next week before the world Open, so if there are any of you guys that are going to be there you are more than welcome to sit down and play to see what you think. The price is $2500 or I would have Two! Its clear and the parallax is nice. It weighs 26.3 ounces and the eye relief is 4.2-3.8,and a 34mm tube. and 56mm objective.

Hey Butch. Since I receive no compensation for my reviews, I have nothing to gain by lying about the products. When I was writing for PS Magazine, I sent some products back that did not measure up . I did not write up a glowing report of something that was junk, but I also did not try to destroy the product with a bad report. The item that I found not up to standards was returned with an explanation of why I didn't think it was acceptable.

There is a saying that a writer can doom something with faint praise. I received the scopes because I requested them. I have not received any payment for articles since the demise of PS Magazine. The scopes that I am testing now are on consignment for 90 days. I will use them in competition later this month and in August. Then I will return them (at my expense).

I currently write for the NBRSA Magazine, The Target Shooter web site, Long Range Hunting Web site and occasionally for this web site. Good shooting...James

There will not be a side-by-side comparison. I don't think it is fair to either since there is quite a bit of difference in price. I can say on the basis of early testing that both are quality scopes. I have had the Burris a little longer and had a chance to test it at a 600 yard match. It performed well at the match and I shot a 186/4x score in some hot weather with the accompanying mirage. I have not shot the Leupold in competition, but will do so on July 27th. Good shooting...James

James, you know I'm jerking your chain. I working on a project with John Barsness at this time. Takes a long time for some of these projects.

James I'm think of trying to get a NightForce Competition side by side with the Leupold just for the sake of clarity. Matt Kline has one so I'm thinking he may want to see the difference.

Joe,
I don't shoot 1,000 yard benchrest or F-class. Two of the three formats that I shoot have very, very small scoring rings. Small enough that I'd prefer 1/16 MOA adjustments if I could get them. I've toyed win the idea of a frozen scope and external adjustments, but the right setup hasn't been there for me yet.

Are you gonna have that on your LG at match 6? I would like to see one..

Ray Yes I will have there, I had it at the last match ware were you, and also next wednesday till the World Open. GSPV I think what your best option would be is to hold if its that critical! I don't think they can get that accurate with 1/16 min. clicks.

I'm skipping the Open, I don't think I am competitive enough yet.. I will make my way over to check out the Leupold on match six if that is okay..

Ray you are going to miss a good time, and meet a lot of the top shooters from all over. Like my buddies from down south, there some of the best shooters in the country. So are we! But the thing is you think you are not competitive enough, I haven't been that great this year myself, but what I love about this game, Anyone can win. The wind can blow them in as well as it can blow them out. Don't ever be afraid of getting beat! I get whip a lot but I keep trying. The food is going to be great and the people you will meet PRICELESS.
