Turkey hunting help

i plan on taking a youngster on a youth season turkey hunt, would hunting out of an elevated closed in deer blind be a possibility? i am not much of a turkey hunter LOL

any help would be appreciated!

To beat a turkey you need to be able to be completely still when they are looking in your direction, this is more difficult than most people realize and they will even see your eyes blinking! I usually squint to avoid that and only move when they have their back to me.

Ideally you will need to be at ground level. Well concealed and still. They can pin point a call to the EXACT location so I doubt an elevated blind will fool them.

You can hunt them from an enclosed elevated blind, tree stand, no blind, forget it. Just pop up a ground blind where you see turkeys. You can pattern them just like whitetails. Turkeys instincts are superb as is their eyesight and hearing. Thank god they can't smell or they would be almost impossible to kill. That being said, they are kinda stupid. You can pop up a ground blind in the middle of a field and put out a couple of decoys and you're in business. Scares the dog poop out of the deer, not turkeys. I've only hunted Merriams, YMMV. Mike

We can’t hunt from an elevated position.
They can see you blink and they can triangulate your call and yes if they could smell you would never kill one.
You can pattern them with a trail camera. Set up a blind, decoys and wait. Best of luck to you.

They make a distinct cluck when they thought they saw something or sense dangers. You only get one of those! They’re best defense is numbers of eyes by staying grouped. I’ve killed doubles several times with my bow by using the Alvin York method, they can be beat if you know the rules. Not a really smart animal just have great eyesight.

Check your state hunting regulations. Make sure you can hunt turkeys from an elevated platform. If so, have your shotgun, crossbow on the window sill ready for a shot when the birds come in. They have the best vision of any game I've ever hunted. One small move and there history. Another option and personally my favorite in a pop up ground blind. Unlike deer, you can pop one up in there dining room and it will not spook them one bit. They'll come right up to it and strut right around it while your in it. Again, be ready for the shot before they arrive. Couple hen decoys 20 yards out and cluck and purr on a call. Good luck

I've got two videos of toms - one where they chased the pickup 100 yards down a dirt road so they could attack their reflections in the chrome and one where I was 10 feet away from a tom asking him what he was doing to the truck, once again attacking his reflection in the bumper. The caveat is that they are pretty used to me being around. I don't hunt them because I have no use for one. They are tough as shoe leather.

You guys are right in that they are sharp and they can disappear from view in a heartbeat. I've been able to observe them and they will turn their back to you and squat.

When you hunt them, you have to target one gobbler, learn his patterns, and hunt him. Some try to hunt a different bird by just hunting anything that they hear gobble, so they never get a "target" figured out and have little success.

Mine serve a better purpose as entertainment. Sometimes if they get hungry they go under the tractor shed and eat from broken bags of corn. Funny that when breeding season is not in, their are 3 of them together and 2 eat while one is the lookout.

I'm feeding about 30-40 birds here in my yard. There not the smartest while here because they feel like it's their safety zone. Catch them in the woods when your out there and their Ma nature sense kicks in. There survivors 24/7. They didn't survive in the wild being dumb. Coyotes and bobcats here hunt them. Their on alert full time except here when the wife feeds them and they think she's MaMa. Same with deer we feed.

They are considered a Nuisance bird in my neighborhood, most people won’t eat them unless their near starving.
Personally I think they’re kinda cool as long I don’t have to clean up behind them or listen to um gobble at 5 am

Ya I'm starting to have that feeling somewhat. I'm with you tho, I love watching them and they really don't make a mess on the lawn thru the winter as it's pretty much gone by spring. I feed them on the edge of the lawn/brush line when the snow is gone. They do intimidate the deer tho. I have to feed turkeys in the morning and deer the evening. Lots of people here consider them a nuisance also.
