I wonder what all it entails to "tune" a scale ?

Hal
Hal,
I don't know how to properly tune one but there are things you can do to tune them up a little your self,

#1 Sharpen the knife edged on the beam, and clean the saddles
#2 level the scale
#3 put all the weights on zero, place the empty pan on the scale,is it perfectly on zero? if not add or remove weight from the pan holder until it reads zero, I use small pieces of solder.
#4 make sure the pan holder and wire loop that it sits on is free and doesn't bind in any way
#5 Keep the scale clean and covered, when not in use. some say to remove the beam when not in use.

These are things I have learned to do but if there wrong and someone reads this chime right in as they are just little things I have picked up here and there.

What model scales do you have and what it the problem?

Here are a couple of videos that I made some time ago that might help.

Many thanks for the information. I have a Ohaus 1110 Dial-O-Grain scale that sometimes needs a little nudging to weigh a charge. I had watched the videos from another posting. Thanks again. Fasher

bozo699, Yes, I know, I furnished the link, I did not want anyone to think I was “the go to guy” or think I knew him or had a scale repaired by him, but, like the last time the subject was posted there seemed to be an element missing and that element was a big secret, so secret it had to be mailed, one at a time, the question was asked “HOW MUCH”!!!!!, again, not wanting anyone to think I was the go-to person, I furnished a link, I gave credit for the information to someone else.

Fasher, I have the 4 beam Cent-o-gram. I purchased a CP 1/2” impact wrench, the pawn dealer threw the scale in on the deal. It is a spot on scale for counting cases, bullets etc., but I have too many scales that measure in grains to convert grams to grains.

What is the "knife edge"? I have a RCBS 505 that I want to tune.

Thanks
The knife edges are the part that the whole beam pivots on. They lay in the floating Agate bearing "Vee" blocks. This is the heart of any beam scale, with dull, bent, chipped or in any other way damaged knife edges the scale will never be reliable or accurate. If you think you may have a problem with them just be careful, it is very easy to damage them beyond repair. To dress up the knife edges takes just the smallest wipe with a very fine stone, preferably in a jig to maintain the exact angle and straightness of the edge.
