Tuning a sako extractor and 788 6br build

I have acquired a rem 788 that has some unique attributes (i.e. customized). Its got a 0 round 6br barrel on it, single shot. My current problem is its sako extractor. It's not snapping over the rim, just pushing the extractor straight back. I have limited first hand experience with this style extractor, and the ones I do have just work.

What are my options for tuning this? Just a couple basic pics.

Obviously, the trailing edge of the extractor is a bit rough, I can clean that up. Do I need to change the angle of the face? Fit seems a little sloppy to me.

Wow, someone made a mess of that. Extractor looks to far back from the bolt nose. Will it fit over the rim of the cartridge by hand? I would compare it to one of the other bolts that do work. The angle on the extractor does look very blunt, for lack of a better word. Let us know what you find out.

The length of the slot is pretty good, it's nearly flush with the bolt nose. The perspective is a little wonky in the second pic.

Yes it will fit over a case rim when inserted by hand.

Make sure the bevel radius matches the ID of the bolt nose. Most likely there is a flat spot that is pushing against the rim of the cartridge. It might be the perspective but the install looks all sorts of wonky.

Its actually beveled the entire thickness, no flat. It was very rough, I smoothed it a little with a Swiss file, but stopped before I changed any dimensions. I think it may just need a new extractor claw.

I'll pull it out tonight after work and see whats going on.

Have you checked the barrel counter-bore diameter - it's possible that the rim:extractor claw contact is pushing the outside surface against the counter-bore wall, thus limiting travel and preventing the claw from clearing the rim . . . well, presuming that you use the Rem. counter-bore. RG

P.S. addendum: I "shot right over" the 788 - no bolt-nose recess there. However, the design/fit is, "close enough", to the same concept regarding the potential impediment of the outward extractor movement.

That's what I'm thinking. Hopefully some disassembled pics will reveal if this is the case.

I'll check the counter bore as well. I can recreate the issue in hand if I push the brass straight back into the bolt face, I have to physically hook the case rim under the extractor to get it to seat, if that makes sense. I need to lighten the ejector as well, its pretty strong. Didnt have a whole lot of time last night to dig into it.

A little further investigation before dinner. I do not believe counterbore to be the issue. I have not pulled it apart yet, the missus just told me dinner is ready, but here is a quick video of the issue.

I believe its just poor geometry and surface finish of the extractor nose so far.

Took it out and it appears to be made with a dremel and files. It feels like its been hardened, too.

Cleaned up the nose and smoothed it out, it was very rough and actually slightly concave. Extended the ramp up away from the lip a little further, maybe another 0.015" or so. Reinstalled and its already working much better. I'll polish it really smooth, may try a shim in the slot at some point to see if it helps, but for now its working.

Next up on this gun is "fixing" the bolt handle. Apparently, it was the test platform for an old XTC shooter and he wanted faster cycling in position, so he made this ridiculous bolt handle so he could just "knife hand" straight up and cycle it. At least that's the theory that was explained to me. ‍

It appears the original handle was cut and this thing welded on, by the discoloration above the base.

I'm trying to decide between cut, D&T for a stud and put new handle on that way. OR, heat and beat this thing straight enough to cut down and thread for a knob. OR, a combination of the two.

Next up on this gun is "fixing" the bolt handle.

The good thing is they left you with material to work with. A straight handle with a nice teardrop knob and nicely blued would look pretty classy. Avoid anything that resembles a Kenworth shifter.

The extractor is not a Sako brand extractor. I fact I believe it is not an after market Sako either.
It looks home made, and quit crude at best. Sako has not sold their extractors for years, that's why the after markets are available. None of the after market type are as good as the original Sakos from my experience.
