Trouble trying to load 45-70 ammo

In a single shot there is no need to crimp.

It is likely that you don't need to body size either. Unless you are running really hot loads. Check your cases and see if they fit smoothly into the chamber w/o sizing, I bet they do.

Lots of BPCR target shooters don't size at all, they slip fit the bullets into the cases. Turn your sizing die down until it gives you enough friction(1 or 2 thou) fit to hold your bullets, then stop, if the cases fit in the action you don't need to size any more. You need to adjust your seating die as noted above and you should be in great shape.

Typical newbie mistake, you trusted the manufacturer.

You might take a look at the instructions that came with the die set, then compare them with these. Note that there are two different instructions available online.


Here is the instructions for the seating and crimp die.


Until you run across it a few times, trusting the manufacturer’s information isn’t alway a guaranteed path to success. If those rounds had not crumpled the case a couple things might have happened.

Deformed bullets and terrible accuracy.
Excessive pressure.

It’s nice to have friends to bounce things off of starting out.

Well that's definitely a different instruction than the one my set came with.

Having friends to help a newcomer is invaluable, I just hope someday I get enough experience to help someone else down the road.

I think I'll stick to undressed lead bullets for the time being. Loading for three guns the way I'm doing it now uses up enough of my time as it is.

not sure what you mean by “undressed lead” You’re going to want some type of lube or coating on lead bullets. If you’re buying them instead of casting they may be prelubed, but you’ll want to know.

From the first picture of the damaged round it has way more crimp than needed for a repeater, so in a single shot as others have said bye the time you remove the flair when you seat the bullet you have enough tension to keep the bullet in place.

I guess you could say I neck size my 45-70's.
Just in the die enough where the neck holds the bullet.
The different size dies made over the last 100 years.....wow
Current dies work the brass WAY too much. Never really ran one all the way in as I can picture not even that big fat rim able to withstand the withdrawal.
Works well in my Browning 1886 and a new lever Marlin.

Yes, undressed-no jacket. Paper or copper.
Bullets are opre lubed, these ones have a single lube groove.
