Trimming issues

When the cutter is initially touching case neck, don't bang the cutter into it. Slow and easy. Looks like alot of chamfer for a boat tail bullet from pics.

Had Gracey for years sold them ?????
Have a Wilson Hand do it all Trim, turn necks . ( Great Tool).
Have a Newer Lyman with all the Bushings works well ,still have to do inside necks by hand ?

If you are short on time Giraud is the way to go $$$$

Looks like a dull cutter or taking way too much off at a time where it ends up rolling the edges over that are normally only the burrs you take off later.

What it really sounds/looks like, is turning the wrong way on a single edge cutting tool. Maybe not sharpened correctly at when manufacturers.

I haven't used my trimmer in over 2 years now.

If you use a Sinclair chamber length gauge and measure your rifle's chamber you may find that it's much longer than the SAMMI specs listed in the manuals. Even applying Sinclair's recommended safety margin, I've significantly reduced the amount of trimming needed. The best news is these gauges are inexpensive and simple to use.

Some also suggest that safely reducing the shorting of cases, i.e., allowing them to lengthen safely, reduces the chances of carbon ring formation. I don't know if that's true, but it seems plausible.

I recently bought a Henderson - it is expensive but is just awesome. It indexes on the base of the case instead of the shoulder and the speed and accuracy is outstanding! The Giraud works well but does not leave the finish cut that the Henderson does and it indexes off of the shoulder. The Henderson has sped up my reloading process and improved the quality of my case work.

I am very tired of trimming. Using my hornady case trimmer and RCBS case prep station it's taking me a ridiculous amount of time. By far the most time consuming step in the whole process.

With both Lake City and Lapua 223 brass, it comes of the trimmer mushroomed/smashed more than trimmed. Then I have to grind away for quite awhile using 2 different angle deburring tools. Should not be this hard. I have done 308 brass and it seemed much, much easier. Just gently champfering and deburring.
With the 223 I have to get it down to a Knifes edge which I do not like. Often I will get strange chatter marks and also feel weird nicks in the case mouth catching on the tools.

I am currently trying to decide between a Giraud and a Henderson but never the less I still think something is wrong. It takes me several minutes sometimes maybe even 5 per case to successfully chamfer and debbur? Am I pushing too hard with the trimmer doing more smashing than trimming?
Your overdoing it with the VLD chamfer. Get a Wilson/RCBS chamber debur tool and do it by hand.

I have a Giraud for 223 cases, and it trims/chamfers and deburrs all in one attempt or handling of the case. I also have several of the WFT for 6x45, 20P, and 204R. Still need to chamfer/deburr after trimming, same with the LEE trimming tools. I'm seriously considering getting several of the Giruard trimmers, and setting them up for each varmint caliber I have just to make it easier on me.

I need to get the cutter for 6.5cm. I do all my .223 on the Giraud, but the volume of Creed we shoot would make the conversion parts well worth it.

I'm not quite ready to buy a complete machine though.

I am also using the 'new' Lyman with the bushings. Works great and it's fast. However, it doesn't chamfer/deburr the brass.

This sounds like what is happening. The Hornady trimmer is a few years old nothing crazy. I can tell something isn't right. I shouldn't have to spend 5+ minutes per case grinding away with the chamfer and deburring tools.

I bought the Giruard cutter only, not their entire setup. I use a Harbor Freight electric motor and attachment doohickey to connect the cutter head to the motor. Works like a charm, just need to count up how many cutter head tools I should order. LOL

I have a Giruard system with various caliber conversions. Once you do the caliber conversions a few times, it becomes easier and faster to change over for all your calibers

Forster 3-in-1 trimmer head with the Forster trimmer. You can unscrew the manual handle and hook up a cordless screwdriver or drill and do all three operations at once and they come out perfect. I found mine used on eBay for $100. It is caliber specific. The trimmer head is interchangeable for caliber.
Here is my 7mm set up
