Triggers--Jewell Alternatives?

I've got a project in the works. It will probably use a Viper action, but maybe a trued Rem 700. Obviously, the trigger of choice is Jewell, but I'm wondering if anybody uses the significantly less costly Shilen or other alternatives. Personally, I prefer a more vertical Anschutz style trigger, but I've heard it's not easy or cheap to hang an Anschutz on a Viper or Rem 700 action.

I'd like the trigger to adjust from 4 oz. to about 1.5 pounds. We have some tactical matches where you have to carry the gun around and I don't want too light a pull.

I would stay away from the rifle basix triggers if possible, as the three that i have had experience with, have all slam fired in their factory new, factory adjusted condition.

i would like to hear about the light weight shilens though...

I have a Shilen on a 6ppc, and I am building a 6 BR, also with a Shilen. In my opinion the Shilen is second only to the Jewell. I have had no problems.

My Rifle Basix trigger arrived on Thursday. I brought the ERV-3 model which is adjustable from 4oz - 1 1/4 pounds weight.

I eventually got around to fitting it yesterday. Took all of about 15-20 mins. As a matter of fact it was putting the Remington safety and bolt release bits back in the correct place that took the longest and was the most fidliest!!

The trigger was set at the factory to be 6oz. Well, I slammed the bolt shut about 8-10 times in a row and not once did the firing pin fall. I adjusted the weight of pull closer to 1 pound and made a slight adjustment to the overtravel and I found it easy to do. I am now left with a trigger that is wonderfully crisp and breaks like a glass rod. It definately beats the Remington trigger hands down. After dry firing about 20 times in a row there is no change whatsoever in pull weight, a problem I was experiencing with the remington trigger.

I couldn't be happier!

I have used several of the Rifle Basix triggers without any problems at all. I have used both the ERV-3 and the L-3 triggers and all worked and adjusted great. They have never fired without me pulling the trigger and I st them at the low end. I find them to be a cheaper alternative to the Jewell and even the 2-6 ounce L-3 will accept a safety unlike the Jewell.

gary--if you get the right jewell, they come with a safety :thumb: --they make a specific 1.5oz that doesnt take a safety so they can sell it at a lower price than those requiring machining to accept safeties.

I agree with jb1000br concerning the Rifle Basix trigger. I have one for my 17 HMR Marlin and it slam fires every time I close the bolt. I have talked to a gunsmith that will not install them on any of his customers rifles because of this problem. Please be carefull with this trigger. Just my two cents.

I looked at the Shilen trigger for a 700P varmit gun in 22BR, thinking in terms of 1# to 1.5#.The Shilen tech that I talked to said he had several set at 1.5# and they worked fine. I asked about slamming the bolt, dropping the gun, etc and he indicated that it could fall under real stress when set at 1.5#. I got the Jewell, they set it at 1.5#. No problems and it is real consistant. I think that I paid less than $100 more than the Shilen, but I am happy. Can't say about their BR triggers. Jim

I used a Hart 2 0z trigger for 35 years that never changed and was trouble free and two other Hart 2 0z"s for more than 26 years with the same performance. They are very consistant.
