Tried 88gn and 95gn Bergers in my 10" twist Dasher today

I posted recently about a 6 Dasher barrel which I had going sort of OK with 103gn Copperheads in hot weather, but TERRIBLE with 105 Hybrids. I since found out that the barrel was actually a 10" twist, not 8" twist as I was told.
Today it was cooler weather and I tried the 95gn VLDs and 88gn HighBC flat base at 500yds. This time with cooler, denser air, even the 95gn VLDs went terrible, but the Berger 88gn HighBC Flat base bullets went great.
Some had asked me to post how the 95s went in a 10" twist. It seems they are very marginal in this twist. They MIGHT work in hot weather, maybe, but I wont be using them anymore in this barrel.
I had intended this barrel to be a 1000yd LG barrel with a brake, but I think it will be my 300-500yd barrel instead.

RDavies,

The 95 Vld's can be very hard to get to shoot. Get some 90gr BT Berger. I have shot them in a 6BRBS ( very close to a Dasher) 10tw at 1000yds. They are a very good bullet, that is over looked for long range. Berger also make a 87gr VLD or a 10 tw. My 10tw 6BR barrel want shoot the 95's, but loves the 90gr and the 95gr FB Bib's

Mark. I might still try the 90s you mentioned even if it is to use in F Class out to 600yds or so. I think the bearing surface on the 87s is too short for my Dasher throat.
If I get light conditions at 1000yds (hardly ever where I do 1000yds) I will try the lighter 6mm bullets.

I have a 1:9 1/4 twist in my 243 shooting the 95 vld... It shoots lights out as long as its heavy jammed. I know that I am on the edge of stability so I am sure the 10 twist shot like crap. I have never shot the high bc fb but may at some point, the vld just shoots so well for me its hard to change. Matt

Those Berger 88's can shoot , too bad they were discontinued . You may want to try a tangent ogive bullet like the Sierra match king . You're rifle/ throat may like a different ogive . A 10 twist does best with 80-100g bullets but that depends on the length of the bullet , not the weight , a common misconception among shooters .

I didn't realize the 88s had been discontinued. I better stock up at their bearing surface suits my freebore.
Well if you run into a windfall , let me know . I'll soon be posting for some soon . I use them in my 6BR .
