Triangular cross section cassing dies?

Hi everyone,

My name is Austin, and I am brand spanking new on the forum and I was really hoping to reach out for some industry contacts or experienced folks who might have good advice.

You see I am very interested in designing a new cartridge and firearm to bring to market, but after reading the article below and seeing people like Hudson Arms come and go I’m thoughly convinced that. My goal of bringing a firearm to market simply has too much existing competition without some serious advantages like that ones that I hope to get by pressing cartridge cases with a triangular cross section.

I’m interested in the triangular cross section because I think that with doing that I can squeeze a 125grain spire point ogive bullet into a case length close to the size of a pistol, and ideally reach 2800fps without too much chamber pressure to errode the throat.

I’ve also been thinking about using a fsst burning powder, but having some sort of delaying mechanism so that I can have a starter charge that kicks the bullet into the throat and then a separate charge sealed up in ping pong ball nitro cellulose plastic so that the round can be all the way out of the casing by the time the main powder charge kicks in. This would hopefully prevent too much pressure all at once by giving the powder more space to burn.

Now for the ask, is there anything I’m missing in this mental picture that might have explosive consequences?

Thank you
-Austin

To quote the article

Ackley should have the final word here. “There are no Wildcat cartridges which are actually revolutionary. There are a few which fill gaps between existing commercial cartridges. There are many more which are no better and perhaps not as good as their commercial counterparts.

There is not much out there right now that has not been done already in the last 100 years of Cartridge design. Just because its not Main stream right now or a factory cartridge doesn't mean that some Wildcatter has not already built that new cartridge long before it entered your head. The New 6 ARC is a prime example of that.

How would you index a triangular case and make it go into the triangular chamber?
The feed ramps would be on all corners and would cause the case to rotate until the corners matched. I was planning on having a slight taper on the outside to help with that too.

Too true.

You mean where there are two bullets in the same case like SPIW?
I believe he was talking about using a small amount of pistol powder to light the main charge on big magnum and black powder cases where primers at one time had trouble with proper ignition.
