Triangular barrel countour?

Has anyone read about Remington's new VTR varmint tactical rifle? We just got some new information at work about them and they claim that their new triangular barrel contour is "revolutionary". Just wondering if anyone has heard anything good or bad about this new rifle. It apparently has an internally machined muzzle brake from the factory. Its not on the website yet but I have the 2008 catalog from work an its in their clear as day

Picture of the rifle over here, in case someone hasn't seen it:

My first thought was "man, that's ugly". Is this an indication of what the new management has in store for us? It's a shame that they couldn't have come up with something really nice for their debut.

Followed by thinking back to a couple of Big Green's recent blunders like the Ti and the Etronix which were both selling for under distributor cost within a year of their introduction. Consumers were underwhelmed.

I think that the only 700's that I'll be purchasing might be their actions for use in custom builds, if Remington can manage to avoid screwing them up. On second thought Stiller makes a much better product that winds up costing less when all things are considered.

Wow, that is one ugly rifle, not quite as bad as the "new" Winchesters. I guess that there is always a segment of every group that thinks something has to be radically different to get your attention. I have to admit that I think the new T/C Icon and Kimber's new rifle are beautiful.

But having said that, very accurate rifles have a charm all their own. The M-16/M-4 is a good example, some of the ugliest things ever made but with the right mods and a good shooter they will put a lot of bolt rifles to shame.

Guys, I agree. This is some kind of sorry. What on earth are they doing? Remington is loosing ground fast. If that is keeping up with the times then the clock is wrong. Bill

Thats about as stupid looking as the Leupold scope with the big dent in the bottom of the front bell......:)

Please Explain to me which direction the barrel will warp toward as it heats up. Please tell me that Remington stress releves this barrel before and after machining it. I cann't see a hammer forged factory barrel taking this kind of machining.

I will hold my deragatory remarks until I see how it "shoots". My gut feeling is that Remington is betting on looks over performance. Looks like another foolish marketing move by Remington. I thought their new owners would turn things around not continue throwing good money after bad. The engineering side of me says round or multisided, even numbered) barrels make more sence. Three sides at 120 degrees does not make good sense to me. I may just be an old ignorant fool.

Maybe you're right. Some people will collect ANYTHING

I can just imagine this "rifle" teamed up with one of Leupolds dented scopes.

I'm going to go and vomit now ..........

Maybe VarmintAl could put the structure through one of his programs and display the benefit or lack thereof in having a triagular barrel. From what I remember, triangles are the strongest structure for building, but would a barrel really benefit from such a design? There must have been some impetus from remington besides aesthetics...cause there really ain't none to speak of.

"triangles are the strongest structure for building" That is for trusses. When it comes to columns round is the strongest.
