Well, checking cameras since major seasons have closed to see what survived. A few yearling Bucks still on their feet, and a surprise appearance of a (new to us) Buck. He has been in some spirited battles and lived to see another year. We have named him “Evander”……

When an old man dies, a library is lost forever...
This year I changed it up about 2/3 through the season. I started off with one plastic coffee can of shelled corn in the evening; sometimes another in the morning. Sometimes a gallon. When I resupplied my corn, I did a 2:1 mix of corn to sweet feed. The sweet feed has 12% protein. At that point I put out a gallon container of corn / sweet feed every evening.
One thing I was noticing on camera was the duration on station increased. Five or six minutes went to 10-20-30 minutes. A LOT of fresh scent in the area- always a plus. I even had deer bed briefly on a second camera nearby. I generally have less than 10 seconds of shooting time, legal shooting time. Some days I might have as much as 20 minutes.
Late season is always a little tricky, not enough cover and having been exposed to pressure the deer skittish and mostly nocturnal. I don’t get a lot of daytime pics, though if I leave the house at dawn, I will.
Ran out of corn, but still had just a little sweet feed left. I’ve created a way for the deer to pattern me; this guy showed up 20 minutes after I dropped feed, and stayed for about 40 minutes. He cock blocked 5 goes for about 25 minutes until he had eaten what he wanted.
I’ve got a friend in another state mixing 18% protein in a 1:1 ratio. Judging by the mass of the racks he’s sent in pics, I might start that. About the time antler development starts.
