Mule deer pics

When they get that big, they are usually not good eaters, but best left for breeders. I hunt to eat, but would never begrudge someone wanting one of them for a wall hanger. Good luck on your hunt. I get all I need watching you thru the photos. Keep 'em coming. Again, good luck..hope you tag one.

We raised seven kids on elk and deer. What we found that worked good for older deer and elk is bottling the meat. It doesn't matter how tough they are, when they set in a bottle for year it just falls apart, we use it for tacos, stews and save the butter bucks for steaks. Whats curious is most of the kids prefer the bottled meat. I'm more of fried backstraps in flour and gravy kid of guy but to each their own. Thanks for the well wishes!

All good points. The crock pot does a pretty good job of tenderizing venison also.

What are your hunt dates for these bruisers? I am looking forward to seeing the success pics. If I had 7 kids I would have to raise them on squirrel, possum and coon as I could not afford centerfire ammo. My friend in CO has lesser meat made into hot dogs for his kids. He just left for a CO sheep hunt. Any idea how those taste? I cannot imagine an archery hunt in the Sangre de Cristo mountains will be easy so not banking on a taste report from him.

Yall are nuts. We shot mule deer, let it hang in a cooler for a week, then cut it up. Some of the best eatin ive ever had....

Those are nice deer. My first time out for mulies i shot AT bucks twice that size. Missed my ass kentucky windaging it. After that adventure it got me into long range shooting. That was my "depressing moment" that changed my shooting life.

(Wasnt my own guns though)

I then got serious and started teaching myself, then ended up in formal gov training years later. Thats what spiked my career.

Hunt starts the last week of October. It's a 7 day hunt. It's rough country, lots of deer and a few bucks in the 180 plus class. We have four tags in camp, i thought we had three but just found out my cousin drew too. A guide friend of mine will be In camp, maybe the best I've seen glassing. I've taken one buck out of there that is just under 230 inches, 37 inches wide, 4 on one side, goofy on the other side with a 10 inch drop. I think luck will be on our side if we fill half the tags with 200 inch plus mule deer. They are there but it's big country and the first time they see or hear the horses their fifth instinct kicks in, makes it fun.

If your seeing deer twice that big you hunted in a very special spot, I wouldn't tell a soul, 400 inch mule deer are tough to find.

I built a meat cooler and age wild game and cut it myself. No bone, no tendon, no sinew. Your right it makes a huge difference. Sometimes no matter how much care you give it though it still comes out tough, that's when it becomes jerky or goes in a bottle.

Well twice the size is pushing it yes, but getting the point across... they were wide/wider than the 1st buck, but much taller. Id guess they would push 300 inch or break 300. No doubts.

I put my hands on a 336 inch mule deer, shot by a friend who spent 33 days in pursuit. The biggest to ever come off the Arizona Strip. Those kind of deer are truly Giants in the gene pool. I'm not a big fan of high fence ranches where they breed animals to become bohemeths, something seems wrong about all of that. 300 inch plus mule deer, 450 inch elk are special creatures, every hunters dream. I shouldnt say that, a lot of hunters are in it for the meat, I enjoy all of it, meat, horns, memories and on and on. Some of the best times with family and friends have been spent in woods, I'm sure many of you feel the same.

I honestly did not know there was such a thing as a 300" Mule Deer.

I think the world record is just over 360 or right at it, killed by a meat hunter with a lever action Winchester. You could probably check it out at the Boone and Crockett website. Pretty amazing buck.

Update. The season ended this past Friday. We hunted hard for all seven days right up till last light on the final day. I passed on a solid 180 buck on the second day, passed on another 180ish buck on the fourth day. We saw a lot of small bucks, glassed up a huge Bull Elk, over 410 inches would be my guess, saw two bears, lots of yotes, Javelinas, and lots of small stuff. We saw a lot of game this time around, not a dry day the whole hunt. My wife tagged out on good eating buck, fat, young and aging as we speak.

I had my heart sat on the big bucks and never saw them, no regrets. I was just grateful for a week in some the best country God ever created. Best therapy I know. Now if I can just draw that tag again next year.
