Tornado S Steel brush on douglas ss barrel disaster

I won't even put a SS cleaning rod in my bore, let alone a brush. Too bad he had to learn that lesson the hard way. I'm sure we can all recall some hard lessons learned with firearms in one form or the other. Good to hear it's finally shooting decent :)

The craziest part is that the Tornado company even produces such a thing and sells it to folks who don't know any better

My best cleaning rods are IVY, why are they bad?

Do whatever the hell you want Butch. To each his own. Im sure you know what youre doing and are smart enough to know how to keep from damaging your bore. But I'm not gonna fall into another one of your fights I read all the time on other threads so you might as well just stop with the prodding right now.

Hey guys, don't have the money to rebarrel old 6mm rem tornado barrel right now, so , gonna see what I can do with flitz polish and moly stuff. also might get some CT ballistic 95 gr bullets
and see what happens. let you know how it goes

There are all kinds of detrimental/in-effective products for sale on the market. In my home state, there is an ethanol mandate for gasoline, but the auto parts stores still have HEET on the shelves. Some gas stations have green fuel nozzle covers for diesel and black for gasoline, others are exactly opposite. You can put any service class of engine oil you wish into your vehicle, but you may not like the results.

My point is, the consumer is ultimately responsible for how he/she uses the product they purchase.

Unless we're buying coffee in a McDonalds drive-thru, that is.

Swear to God, I'll never understand that one . . . .
Little known side fact on mcdonalds coffee thing. The particular franchise had been sited twice beforehand by inspectors for thier coffe being well above the limit of 160/165°F cant quite remember. Was 180° once I believe. While the whole thing is extremely stupid, I believe the lawsuit only stemed from the fact that she was burnt worse than she should have been and they could prove intentional neglect on part of McDonald's. But that story is much less fun to talk about.

Hey ..you guys are not going to believe this one...not sure I do. So when I started trying to solve this problem.. this gun was shooting 3 foot groups at 25 yards with 105 a max bullets... yea it was just shredding bullets literally. it was so bad. but with you guys help. and the help of a benchrest shooter I met at the range. it looks like I have been able to recondition this barrel... I went out last Thursday and put 5 a max bullets just under three quarter inch. another 5 shots were right at three quarter inch.. also 4 shot group at 5 eights when I got to the target and looked, I broke down and cried. I cant believe it myself. I had totally given up on this gun my dad had built back in the sixties. Now I am going to do the same treatment on my other guns that had a tornado brush in them, but not as damaged as the SS barrel was. Till next time. JGF

You can not recondition a barrel, ie put steel back where it was removed. I think this proves that you had a fouling/cleaning problem and not a brush problem.
THat said, I was told years ago by someone in the AMU that more damage is done from cleaning rods than from brushes, firing, etc. Basically you take a long steel rod, coat it with an abrasive slurry of carbon and a cutting fluid(solvent) and run it up and down the bore, in effect lapping it.
Basically what he stated was to use bore guides, clean from the breach end when you can, and wipe your rod off after every stroke. Cleaning is not perfect but you can minimize the damage.
