tool for machining BR cases to fit PPC

I hope this doesn't sound silly buuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuut,I would like to machine my BR cases to fit a PPC bolt face,I tried grinding my own tool bit to do this in one operation and ...........
............................................well as a tool grinder I make a very good mechanic :(.
Can someone advise me of how, where, when I could get one from.

Regards Chris.

Chris,
I agree - I'd be interested in purchasing something that I could use for this as well.

Look up a cutter grinding shop in your area. They re- sharpen cutting tools for machine shops. Go to them and show them what you want to do and they can special grind a cutter for your machine. Take prints of the bases of the two cases.
I take it you are using some type of lathe to do the work?????????????

I would love to use a grinding shop but they are like rocking horse poo in my area..............................read non existant, yes I have access to a lathe where I work but try as I might I can not sucessfully grind a piece of tool steel so I have half or what I need.
If I could purchase what I need it would be heaps easier......................I would prefer not to open up my bolt face .

I ground a piece of HHS that has the angle of the extractor groove and the tip has a flat on it the width of the groove. I would plunge cut the groove first and then back the cutter out and cut the rim diameter.

I also tried grinding a toll to do this in one cut but couldn't with the stuff I have.

The cutter kinda looks like this. Just write down the number on the cross feed and cut them all the same.

I could cut a case in less than a minute.

Hope this helps

The 6.5 Grendel case is popular for wildcatting and uses a ppc case head. It's right between a ppc and a BR in terms of capacity and Lapua makes great brass for it that uses small primers and small flash holes. Simply neck it up or down to whatever caliber you plan on shooting. What's not to like? I use it myself necked up to 30, and have never felt it was any kind of hindrance. In fact, I feel it is somewhat advantageous. Most importantly, I have done pretty well with it against 30BR's. I was probably the first(according to others) to have done this with the Grendel case and have called it a 30 Major since 2007. I have the reamers, and dies are very straightforward to make, either custom or using a modified Redding Type S Grendel sizing die and a Wilson type seater. I've been down your path with rebating rims and the path of going with the Grendel case. I'll take the Grendel route from now on. There are many detractors to the idea of using anything other than a 30BR for score shooting, but damn few of them have ever tried it and are only repeating what they believe, or are basing it on the number of shooters that are shooting one vs. the other. This is the only area that the 30BR is any better than a 30 Major, IMHO. And FWIW, I have had several of both. I think the same could be said about the Grendel case necked down and compared to a 6BR. You can also blow the shoulder forward and essentially match the BR capacity. Rebating rims would make more sense to me if the Grendel case wasn't there. Bottom line...if you have a dedicated ppc boltface rifle, the Grendel case just makes sense. JMHO.--Mike Ezell

Soooooo... your objective is to create a case profile with the head diameter of the PPC family but with overall dimensions of the BR case? Kinda like a 6.5-284, with it's 308 head size but fatter case at the web & body?

I know a fellow shooter who makes an obsolete 25-something out of 223REM cases he picks up everywhere, but he's a machinist / die maker by profession & has vastly more skills with metal than myself.

Seems like a worthwhile project if you have the time (maybe $$ too for a custom reamer if'n you're chambering for a modified case design) to invest just to fit a BR-chambered barrel onto a PPC-boltface action.

Yep, the availability of high quality 6.5 Grendel brass has been used to do just that. 6RAT (Greg Krebaum), 6FATRAT (same basic profile but with slightly modified body and neck diameter), 6mmAR, a Turbo and Improved variant (shoulder blown forward, Improved with a different shoulder angle all developed by Robert Whitley III, a forum member here) are exactly what resulted. They're well-proven designs for both gas gun autoloaders and bolt guns.

You can try Ron Hoehn.
Maybe he'll sell you a cutter or you can send your brass to him and he'll cut it.

Its a somewhat common conversion.
I have a stiller Drop port that I'd like to convert from PPC to 30BR as a backup/fun gun.
From what I've been able to learn my choices are either rebate the BR cases or go with the Grendel brass Mike Exell suggested.
Opening up the bolt face is not an option on this particular action. Of course I also would need to modify the drop port.

Question then becomes, modify the cases and use the existing dies and reamers or change reamers and dies?

Ok thanks for the info gentlemen,Mr Ezell has put an idea in my head now....................and it appears to be a more than workable option.............................now to see if the smith I use has the reamer, access to dies etc, once again I thank everyone for their input.

Regards Chris.
