Forming 6 PPC Cases

I have an AR 15 that I put a 6 PPC barrel on,heritage unknown) The chamber head space is a tad long and I want to fit the cases to the chamber a little more. This is by no means a BR quality barrel and I just want to use it for large varmints. One of the areas on the 6 PPC recommends a case full of Bullseye and a plug. Others recommend 10-12 grains of BE, a 1/4 sheet of TWP and corn meal with a plug.

My question is do the results EM about the same. A case of BE Ina 6 PPC is one heck of a lot of powder. I realize that I am not dealing with shoving a bullet down the bore yet I am slightly hesitant. Any help here guys?

Thanks,

Greg

Well I decided to give the fire forming deal a whirl on the 6 PPC I am trying to get running. I took all the suggestions under advisement from the board and sat down with my reference books. The advice ranged from 10% of case capacity using Bullseye up to a case full.

Those that reported doing the process had good luck with varying amounts of Bullseye and corn meal like substances. I decided to do like any reloader would do and loaded up various charges to see how it went. I loaded 10 each at one grain increments form 9 to 12 grains of Bullseye, covered the charge with 1/8 piece of toilet paper, two ply don'tcha know!!) then filled to the bottom of the case neck with corn meal and plugged the neck with paraffin. Cases were primed with CCI Small rifle primers, old stock circa 1981 !!)

I headed out to the desert with 84 degrees, no wind and no clouds,a normal AZ Spring day!!) Once I arrived at my destination I used some old case lube,STOS made by Ponsness-Warren) and lubed up the cases liberally. I fired the first round with my face averted and a long reach away from my important parts. BANG and NO PROBLEMS!!! Oh boy I'm on a roll now. Fired all 40 cases with no problems.

Examination showed no measurable,at least with my tools between the 9 grain versus the 12 grain loads. Case shoulders had moved forward the required amount with no signs of case head separation as found when firing regular mild loads in this chamber earlier. Who ever cut this chamber was way to generous with their depth and this is what set this project in motion. I believe that I will now be able to utilize this barrel with the custom fitted cases. Looking at $300 worth of brass and nothing to shoot them in was rater depressing to say the least.

I will post the shooting results on this one if I get out to the range this weekend. Thanks for all the help guys.

Greg L.
