Too many choices but down to 3

I had a woody for the edge but something about those 7mm bullets.

I've got no problem with a break and I'm sure APA will be getting a call from me when I get to that point, about 5 years ago I built a 7WSM pistol so I know all about breaks and recoil even my 243 has a break now and can watch bullet trace.

The more I really dig and narrow things down the 28 Nosler is really starting to shine high brass costs and all. Later,

I see that at MidwayUSA you can get loaded rounds of Nosler 28 for essentially the same price as just the brass, if that makes you feel any better. Still about $2.75 each. Ouch!!

Feel better? honestly there is nothing about the cost of brass or rounds that makes me feel all warm and fuzzy :) everything else is for the most part a wash though! I play my cards right I'd guess 100pcs of brass would outlive the barrel. Later,

Another vote for the .28 Nosler. Reloder 33 and your choice of Bergers and you'll be on your way. As to brass price, Nosler runs sales on it every now and then.

This was made off 300 Winchester brass I necked down and I put a Berger 195 EOL Elite Hunter bullet on. Sent it to them to measure for the print.
I went this route because I have lots of 300WM brass laying around. So we'll see how it does.
 
aspiker I would be very interested in your results! I really like that round just not a fan of not much info on it out on the web.

I get my reamers from Manson and I was thinking the Sierra bullets, nothing wrong with Berger as I shoot them with great results in my 243 it's just the Sierra are easier to get.

Do me a favor as it's going to be a drawn out process on my build but if you remember let me know how things go please. I know on mine a 28" tube is a given for whatever reamer I end up cramming in the blank :) Later,

If your Savage 111 action has a standard small shank I would not bother with any RUM based cartridge because you may have extraction issues. Same thing goes for the WSM cartridges.

300winmag is most ideal because it will not be expensive to shoot.

215 Bergers or the new Hornady 225 gr eld-m.
 
Unless you plan on hunting at very long range and need the terminal ballistics, many of the 6.5 rounds have comparable trajectories as the mags. You can pull up JBM, select the various bullets, and enter a reasonable velocity in the 2900 to 3000 fps range and quickly compare. A simple index of BC x Velocity offers a quick ballpark comparison.
 
The two most important things are accuracy and seeing bullet impacts. Those are the basic building blocks fro ELR. After that everything is debatable. SOCOM is going to a 300 Norma in the ASR. There's a reason it's not a 7MM or smaller. The 30 is more accurate than a 388 with less recoil. Anything smaller compromises terminal performance. A large 30 with heavy bullets would be my first choice. 300WM on the small side and the 300 Norma on the large end of things. In between are several choices. One I'm very familiar with is the 30-375R. Anything much larger than that and you quickly get to the extremes in case capacity. I'd rather shoot 75+ grains of powder vs 90+
 
I've really been running numbers between the 28 Nosler and the boring ol' 300WM both I would probably shoot the Sierra bullets as they are just easier to come by in my area.... .284 looking at the 180SMK and the .308 the 210SMK and running the numbers on JBM while the Nosler is flatter were not talking all that much! this will not be a hunting rig BUT I want to be able to hear hits on steel and yes the bullet splash would be a huge help as well. Honestly I'm leaning toward the 300WM.

I've shot LR for awhile and while 1350 is as far out as I've gotten this has been with a 243 so I know the smaller bullets will get there hits past 1K with the 6 and 6.5's if your by yourself and have hearing pro on hits are rather hard to hear, I shoot a break so most shots 200 out I can spot hits or splashes on a bad day :) the 284 Win I had I never got past 800 but you sure could tell when you hit a plate!

The Savage model 111 has a port of 3.8" so the RUM's would end up too long when seating bullets out to gain some more powder hence the reason I was looking at the Nosler as the cases are a touch shorter or at least that was my thinking.... right or wrong that's the direction my mind was going. This rifle I'm going with a 28" barrel to gain a few more FPS and since I'm not going to drag it around the mountains should be fine as this one is just going to be for punching things mainly steel out at distance.

RL-33. About an ice cream scoop full. 3013fps or so. I have my barrel throated to allow me to load to 3.96"+/-.
Factory magazines limit the 338 LM to an oal about 3.68". My throated barrel offers a round that is .280" longer, oal. That's all a case body capacity increase.
 
I put 1800 rounds through a 300WM last summer at ranges out to 1900yds. Did a similar planning exercise and just couldn't justify the cost of components, recoil etc of the .33's and didn't think the 7's would have enough energy to let me see and/or hear hits at long range - especially on nasty weather days. My rifle had a 28" 1-11 Krieger medium Palma chambered with Grizzly's .300WinMag "Tactical Match" reamer and it ran right around .6moa with 210 Berger LRBTs at 2950fps with multiple powders 7828, RL25, H1000 and even Retumbo. Sure, it has it's compromises but it made me a believer in the 300!
 
300winmag is gonna cost you less to do the same thing as the 30 nosler or any other 7mm hotrod.

My 300winmag 26" barrel has no problems running 208gr at a hair under 3,000 fps, 215gr around 2,950 fps and even 240 smk's at 2,760 is not a max load.
 
Lol want to know something even funnier? I just completed my barreled action, Savage 111 no barrel nut, Bartlein 1-9 heavy Palma at 28", SAMMI min spec reamer then throated so I could load the 215 Berger to a COL of 3.720 puts the boat tail just .010" below the neck junction on the case and put an APA Fat Bastard break on the end so I can (or hope to see) impacts.

I've still got about 2 months before I get my stock from Kevin so a range report is gonna have to wait a bit :)
