to shoot or not to shoot

Shoot it, and take good care of it and the value lost will be minimal. You never know it may be the peice that you keep forever.

Unless you're going to shoot it, I'm with the sell it advisors. In the last six months, I've sold five guns I wasn't shooting and I still need to downsize. OT, I know guys who have a lot of guns they don't shoot. When they die, their heirs will take them to the local gun shop and get pennies on the dollar. Seen it too many times to be a fluke.

Yup! I agree! The worst one I saw was at X-Ring in Newark. I walked in one day and the racks were overflowing with old Mausers, Garands and such. I asked where they got them. They said a woman called. Said her husband had died and she wanted to get rid of his guns. “A basement full”. “How much?” they asked. “Nothing, just come get them out of my basement!”

Not the first time I have heard a similar story. Very sad. Every thing I own I shoot. Not a big list by any means. But even if I had the means to quadruple it, i wouldn't own something that I couldn't shoot.

I had a wealthy friend once. His house, was a museum. Beautiful antiques everywhere, including firearms. He would not allow you to touch anything, you were not allowed walk on the rugs throughout the house. There were rooms he admitted he had not been in in years because he was worried something would happen to them.

It was really sad if you ask me. A great guy but I actually felt sorry for him.

Less sad by far than the large number who call the police to remove them.

I have inherited ZERO guns over my life. Seen several of them. Just one at Aunt/Uncles place was: Pre-war PP and Mauser (?) pistols, similar age Winchester bolt gun unknown caliber, more I never saw closely. Said they should not keep loose in drawers etc, if they don't want to store them, tell me and I will. Instead they called the police one day to get the scary guns gone.

A gun store will at least give them better homes.

I have a unfired Smith and Wesson 29-5 Classic new in the box i want to shoot this thing so bad but then it's not worth as much from what i can see they only made it for two years help me get this shoot it monkey off my back

Try finding a "old model" 629,my 4" is from 1980. I never really beat on it with heavy handloads, cast 429421's around 1000fps and it loves 180JHC and Blue Dot. Heck,it's killed a dz deer, got an action job,and lots of "love" marks. Also have an 8" Python that is worn shiny from handling,it has 15k rounds down it and still shoots great. The list goes on....

Give you 2 guesses what I'd do with it.

It's going to get shot today I see what everyone is talking about I had two 22lr colt pistols that I had a real hard time shooting so I sold them I wont shoot it a lot and will take great care of it as I do with all my guns may need to shoot a deer with it lol
Thanks Ron

I owned one of these. I got a box of Super Vels w/the pistol.
The only thing I can say, anything that "kills on both ends", I dont need. In 10 shots it made my arm sore all the way to
my elbow. LDS

I've been hunting a early Ruger BLK Hawk, the one with the round trigger guard because I had one when they first came out and loved it. Swapped it for something I wanted worse and regretted ever since. My son Jim came by the other day and handed me a blue Ruger red hawk 8" and said here, play with this. Had forgotten how heavy they were, dug out a box of factory 240s and shot it 12 times just like you said Larry!! Couldn't use my right hand and arm for a week. Now I am loading up some cast 44 spec loads that have milder manners.
If I had that 29 I would either swap it for something I could use or borrow a shooter from someone and try shooting it before I put any milage on the nice one and see if it's worth it,
John

thats a thought-- I sure wouldnt want people who "find" my guns dont call the police in and have them haul them off.

No trade I guess:( I think you made a great decision ---

I
I like the wood grips and then would make it a safe queen. Besides me, how many on AS don’t regularly shoot all your guns?
Ben

I have a rule. If it sits in the safe for 2 years without shooting, it goes to the gun store and I bring something home I will shoot.

sell it by a ruger same caliber barrel length and wail away with it. S&W revolvers fall apart if fired to much with full house loads anyway

Well I shot it fell in love with it shoots very well loads are at 1250 fps with a 220 gr. bullet recoil was light for a 44 mag Thanks for the push I needed
Ron

I have almost the same one with unfluted cylinder with a scope of course. It shoots better than I can. I say shoot it and enjoy it before some else does.

In 1997 I walked into AMS guns in Woodinville and saw a LNIB 1988 S&W 29-4 for $200. I asked, "Why is that so cheap?" I was told the consignment owner was just there and wanted it sold fast. I plopped down $200 and said I did not have time to look at it, but I would be back. That gun was worth $400 then, and probably $900 now.

Not doing was well as the stock market, but ok for a gun.

Is it a Classic DX? And does it have the laminated wood stocks? Interchangeable front sights? Original box, etc? If so, keep it for its collectible value and buy yourself another 29/629.
