Time to re barrel a 22-250

Looking for some input on pros and cons of the 22br and its off spring. I own and love 4- 6BR's or i would be building another. Im leaning towards a 22BR or one of its off spring. Looking to shoot 68-69-or 75 grainers.

Ryan, unfortunately I can't help you with information on a 22br or one of the variants. The 22br was on my short list when I built a fast twist 22 caliber rifle.
But I needed a cartridge that fed well as a repeater. So, I opted for the standard 22-250 with a 24" Brux barrel with a 1 in 8.6 twist. Velocities easily run 3300 fps and and accuracy is < .5 moa using 36.5 grains of H4831sc under a 75 AMAX.

If I hadn't been pressed for time I would have gone with either a 22x47 Lapua or 22 Creedmoor. Slighty more case capacity and better case design with longer necks and steeper shoulders but both wildcats with the associated delays waiting for reamers and dies etc. I believe both of these cartridges would run the 75 Amax at 3400, feed well, shoot accurately and possibly need trimming less often than the standard 22-250.

If you don't need a repeater the .22br should get you 3200 fps and fantastic accuracy using about 30 grains of powder.

The 22-250 should do 3300-3350. With 36-37 grains of powder.

The above mentioned wildcats should do 3400+ with 38-40 grains of powder.

The 22 br dasher and other lengthened versions will probably push velocities near the 22-250 with a grain or two less powder. I 'm sure someone will be along soon to give personal experience. My information is mostly from last years research regarding fast twist .22's, hope it helps.

The .22BR is a challenge to get to feed if you are working with a Remington action. I had a .22BR that was smoking accurate as a predator rifle but it simply wouldn't feed reliably enough for me to use with confidence. I rechambered it to .22x47 Lapua and it feeds perfectly. I didn't have any trouble, or long delays, getting tooling for the conversion. PTG had my custom reamer to me in less than a month and Harrells had my custom sizing die here in less than a week.

The 22BR is a good one, it's very accurate with about the same velocity as a 22-250 using several gr. less powder. Mine are on a 40x and a 700. But that cartridge doesn't feed from a 700 and you'll be using the repeater single shot. So basically you're trading a repeater for a single shot with the same velocity, but better accuracy using less powder. The 6BR actually does a better job of replacing the 22-250....it shoots a 6mm at the same speed a 22-250 shoots that same weight bullet. If you want something in a different class and not more of pretty much the same thing, go with a 22-250AI. It's a substantial jump over the 22-250 and feeds well.

when i shot out a 1 in 8 tw 22-250 i had it chambered in 22 BR and it only shoots 77 smk, but into a tiney hole. i now have a 12 twist and 14 twist 22 BR and the 12 tw will absolutely one hole with 63 cheeks and 64 bergers while the 14 tw pushes 60 bergers at 3600 fps and the ghogs shake in fear when they see me coming! tried a 22 BRX but the extra powder needed to keep up with the 22 BR did a number on it's throat...much like my 22-250. i am working on a 6 BR 14 tw currently and am noting it shoots light bullets at great speed with fast burning powders(lt 32, n133, benchmark) while the 22 BR prefers somewhat slower powders(8208XBR, norma 203B, n140, varget and n540). suspect the 6 BR will last forever while the 22 BRs will wear quicker. i look forward to finding out if this is the case.
