Tell us more about that ammo box, it looks like you are maybe loading it by hand? Or, have you made some sort of trays for loading it? You have me doing some mental engineering now.

I am simply loading it by hand. That is slow but it works fairly well for limited production. It beat setting up and drilling some kind of board. But, it is no good replacement of a set of bullet trays. I have a set of 6mm trays and they are nice.

Joe, we make our bullets the same way.

Since we only make around 600 at a time, we just use a tray I made. It holds 100. We put the lubed jackets in it, Ed uses tweezers to place the cores in, then core seat them.

We keep it as simple as possible.

Here is a very very nice looking set but out of my price range for casual use.
Could a .30 cal set be made out of alternative materials (plastic or printed) for say a third of that amount?

I have a good friend who has a set of 6mm for 1.150 jackets. He works at a local High Scool and had the shop teacher have the students make them as a shop project on the CNC mill. They do 250 at a time and are made from Delron. They are nice but aluminum would be better for cleaning. You just put them in the dishwasher and done. They need to be cleaned periodically.

I believe his trays are 16”x16”. I am certain that larger ones could be made so once you are on the press you don’t have to stop. Cleaning would require a trip to the bathtub, hot water and some dishwasher detergent.

Dave, that might be a lot like barrels.

Someone will score a phenomenal barrel from a particular manufacture in a particular configuration, win a bunch of matches, and suddenly everybody has to have one.

I have seen it happen several times. Heck, I would have taken a wagon load of copies of that Unlimited Barrel you had at Phoenix several years ago.

Some bullet maker might have had some jackets that weighed a few tenths of a grain less, made some great bullets, suddenly a legend, (or old wives tail), is born.

I don’t pay much attention to any of it. With the jacket situation the way it is now, you kinda get what happens to roll off of the conveyor and goes in your buckets for shipping.

I picked up this electronic microscope on Amazon.

It works pretty good for seeing the bleedby and making sure your not scraping the inside of the jacket

That's pretty slick. I just picked up a 10" Teslong pistola bore scope...will see how that works. -Al

Dave, Jackie and others- about10 years ago when many were having problems wih J-4's, the problem was jackets were too hard and had to be heat treated to solve the problem- so I'm thinking the good lots of jackets have even wall thickness and are on the soft side?
