Time to make Rock Candy.......

Al has his donut thread going and this would not be proper in there, so.......
From the Fujinator skunk works, of Fly by Night Industries, This is the current
insanity going on. I'm going solid copper for my BR bullets. I just don't want to
give up my 7's, and always looking for another path to clear......I was on the
Hammer Bullets website nosing around and my eye caught one of the Hunter
bullets, so i ordered a sample, and one thing lead to another. i called Brian
and Steve, the owners and ask about doing a custom for me to test. They said
no problem, so out to the shop i went and created a new design, and sent a
sample for them to duplicate. Not long after, I had 17 pieces at my door for
approval. Slowest 12 twist in .284 is what I'm running on my new 7.2 cat. I did a
charge work up on the 17 with N-i35. At 41.4 grains, I was at 3518 fps and the
bolt was still limp. During the work up on the hotter end, and .020" off the lands.
i was in the twos, with one 3 shot group doing a .180". Barrel for these could use
a 15 twist.......I called Brian back up to get me 500 asap. It got here 4 days before
leaving for Orangeburg. I did use these basically untested for the fun shoot.
Other then a couple of major brain farts, no flags, and that crazy in your face
wind Thursday morning, I did pop a 1.333" group where others were well over
that......I'll play more with these after i order in the right twist for it. I believe I
could get these going in the 3600 fps area.

Initial 500 piece prototype numbers........ .903" long with a .060" meplat, and rebated
boat tail, weighing 92 grains. Room to make adjustments......Gotta kick that can !!

On G1, I'm estimating 275 roughly. The .060" meplat was left as is
to the original program, where the point would be spotted then
drilled for a hollow point as used in the hunter bullet. A talk with
Brian for a bit on this, we both agreed to leave it alone for initial
tests for 100/300 short range. It does have the benefit to shorten
the bullet and trim weight, but I need to start compiling data but I
also need a barrel first. Have to make some calls......

Have you measured the individual bullets to see exactly how close the Swiss Bar Feed Lathe is machining the bullets.?

I did a 50 piece check on length, width and base to ogive. Base to ogive
using my Hollands comparator maybe seen the needle move only to either
side of the dial's hash mark. i should give my son a few to check on the
optical comparator they have at his work place. I think he told me it can
measure to 1/2 millionth !!! Brian tells me they hold .0002" during a run.
It's all of that what I can tell.

I was thinking more in terms of diameter.
I am asking because last year, a member of our Gun Club built a 408 Chey Tac. He was using fully machined bullets.
I measured a bunch of them and the shank size varied as much as .0003 from bullet to bullet.

I do not know who was making the bullets. Other than the small difference in shank diameter, they were beautiful.

If you remember our conversation at The Tack Driver, I asked if your bullet maker was running them through some type of carbide ring die to insure each bullet was exact in diameter.

I am just curious more than anything.

Yes, i remember the conversation. I put a note in my paper work to ask
other questions next time I talk to him. I'll get things weeded out.

Looks like a 15 twist barrel will be a ballpark for testing at a 1.5 number.
Kick the can again......

Nothing really new to report. Still in the process of moving to new digs.
Out of Erie and south to Waterford. Not a real long distance but next
door to my Sons garage and our machinery......Talked to several barrel
makers already and ran into some snags, and time frames are so far out
I'd be sitting on my thumbs for almost a year. Still waiting on Hart to
give me a time frame and cost to have a custom button made for me.
I'm still looking to have 15 twist barrels made but, as a short term fix,
Lilja does do a 6 groove, 14 twist and get it to me in 12 to 14 weeks.
Plan is to keep the 7.2 Greedmore running, and build a 7BR for this
new bullet. The 7.2 showed it will shoot, so going to the 7BR case and
a proper twist barrel for it, it will let me get into the much faster burning
powders, and cover more new ground......Already thinking of this bullet's
first revision to lighten it even more. Also will need a 7BR reamer. I have
thoughts on that also. Peterson has the brass. I have lots of Lego parts
on the shelves for a custom stock build, and the mini refrigerator is always
stocked with cold ones......As a parting shot (Pun intended)......I took my
grandson out to the range to get a feel for the rifle he'll be using this deer
season. He's hitting 4" plates at 200 yards with the 250 Savage 99......I took
the opportunity with the 7.2 to push this new solid a bit more with N-135.
Primer still looks reasonable but got a hint of stiffer bolt lift. I logged it as
max. I finally got it to top out over 3600 fps. 3604 fps average for 3 shots.

Foo, did Zach get any action. Nice boy, I hope he can shoot some next year. If he is going to shoot 22lr at a 100yd UBR match give me a heads up, I will also play.20230805_140128.jpg

I trimmed the forest back some since then, and he's as tall as me now.
No joy on the buck yet. i was a bit late getting doe tags, but he's insisting
on horns......I'm just carrying my pistol and bino's so I can give him all the
effort......Not sure about the UBR shoots. If I get the 7BR done, I may have
him shoot that. It's still down the road.

This pic is not as scary.....LOL
