That 6br in the video was 3 years in the making. I formed the plan, then got sidetracked on other projects and new purchases. Every idea has it’s day on the range, eventually!

I’ll try to remember to post a pic of my bolt face. I have a few t3 s. I’ll pull a bolt and compare them to see if anything changed in the design from the 595.

Has anyone built a dedicated benchrest rifle on a Tikka T3 action? Pro's /con's ?

A consideration concerning the Tikka action would be their ability to be loaded and fired rapidly like so many people do when they feel that the time is right. A better option would be to start with a new Savage rifle chambered in 6 BR, preferably a right bolt , left port or a used rifle with a new barrel…..Check out Shooters Corner In New Jersey I believe.

Here’s the bolt picture. I pulled my t3 6.5 Creed to compare. The insides look and measure close. I don’t find any substantive differences in the extractors.

Little confusing to me. You were talking "Benchrest" duty. That means single shot, grouping less than 1/4 moa, flat forends, flat buttstocks, triggers in the 1-3 oz range, ejectors removable for testing, tuned actions with perfect lug contact, fast ignition and ease of spring changing, heavy barrels and more.

Sure you can shoot benchrest with near anything that goes bang. Lots of PRC rifles try. It gets the owners an experience and maybe an interest. Then the first thing they do if wanting to compete is get rid their rifles and build something that works. Possible you can do it with a Titka action but why?

I bought a Tikka t3 in 223 that came with one of those yellow single shot sled inserts. It works great.

I'm going to beg to differ on that one, not that Savage are bad rather the road will end unfavorably due to loose tolerances and poor trigger design as well as the cocking ramp struggles.
no matter how much money you throw at it a custom action will kick its ass.
Tikka has a better mousetrap if you can get the after market support.

I have two Savages, never again. The Savage weak point to me is they have a very poor trigger design with little if any aftermarket support. I am a benchrest shooter / target shooter and hunter. Try to purchase a newer style left hand, trigger guard bolt release trigger that is the quality of a Timney.

Then perhaps machine a single shot sled to replace the magazine.

I machined one out of aluminum...to fit INTO the magazine. Works slick as snot.

You’ll be blazing a new trail and I think it would work. I was waiting (hoping)for yukonal to chime in saying that he’s done it but he hasn’t. I guess we won’t know until someone does it. Are you going to try it?

For shooting 'TR, I have plenty of time to cycle and load. Really don't have a need for a left port. I realize they are handy for BR...as was the original intention of this thread.

How did we go from BR, to just grooving on our Tikkas?

Good point Steve. I measured the ports on mine, and my T3's measure .615 x 3.150. My T3X measured .675 x 3.150. So the claim that they enlarged the port is true, but 0.060 isn't much different to my fat fingers.

Good point Steve. I measured the ports on mine, and my T3's measure .615 x 3.150. My T3X measured .675 x 3.150. So the claim that they enlarged the port is true, but 0.060 isn't much different to my fat fingers.

The older T3's smaller port should theoretically be stronger. It's a non-issue, as I've never had any issues single loading 284, 308, 708, etc in a T3.

What advantage would you gain? Less powder, more wind drift is all youd gain not to mention locked into not being able to run cheaper brass if need be.

Downside to 6 BR: less velocity, 2 tenths more wind on 10% of my targets

Upside: more accuracy, more consistency, more barrel life, less recoil, cheaper brass (BR Lapua brass is cheaper than all the quality offerings for Creedmoor), less powder, etc. Im sure I left something off the list.

It’s been brought up quite a few times in certain discussions that the majority of PRS matches are won with a variant of the 6BR or a 6.5x47. You could probably add 6XC to that list as well. All of those cartridges have their beginnings in the BR/F-class environment and hold most of the records. It only makes sense that they would also dominate in PRS.
