Tikka action/bolt design.

It's my understanding from reading on the Internet (I know) that the BOLT does not have gas bleed holes drilled into it for letting escaping gas out, also the firing pin assembly is all one piece but I don't see any provision for a "GAS STOP/REDIRECTION" in case of primer/cartridge case failure except a plastic or aluminium shroud.

Now I got this information basically from what people said, and looking at really BAD pictures that didn't show detail. This can't be the way they have designed the action so can someone please explain what is going on?

If anyone has a schematic, pictures, whatever, I would really appreciate seeing them.

The Tikka T3 RH I have has a pressure relief / bleed hole on the left side of the Action. About positioned at the front of the bolt and just about level with the rear of barrel chamber. The Bolt has relief slots cut down each side above and below each locking lug. The is no relief hole in the bolt itself.

If I get time I might take some photos but I'm rather busy getting ready for a competition shoot.

My Tikka T3 was a Blued .243W Varmint and is now mainly a 6.5x47 Lapua in a Benchrest Stock. It is very competative against other custom actions.

Here ya go. Let me know if this is enough.

I found this old thread when searching for some info on Tikka actions that have had blanked primers occur. I had an interesting experience yesterday when shooting my T-3 lite .223 8 twist, with 70g Berger VLD, H-4895, and CCI 400 primers. On the third shot of the day I got met with a whiff of gas and a plastic bolt shroud falling off the rifle and on to the bench. The case easily extracted and I discovered a blanked primer. It appears that most of the gas released in this event went through the firing pin channel and out the back of the bolt where it was effectively diverted by the shroud as I felt no gas on my face or anywhere else. It did shear off the plastic rim on the shroud that holds it to the bolt so its time to look for a replacement.

I would be interested in hearing from anyone else who has vented gas out the wrong end of their Tikka T-3 action as to to how the action handed it.

There are aftermarket shrouds available for the T3 in aluminum and titanium I believe. I use an alloy one one my 223 supervarmint.
