Thoughts!!

I like your Dad's perspective. I can do my transfers online, but I prefer to go to my bank in person, too. I like to know the tellers and managers at the local branch by name. I worked like a slave at my construction business for 26 years. My wife did all the books. Once in a great while, I'd go to the bank. They didn't know who I was and I had to provide proof. It was very disconcerting. Now that I'm retired, I take the extra time to meet the people where I do business. By the way, I own a flip phone, don't text or do Facebook. I joined, but I only lasted a few months. It takes too much time to look at all the pictures of peoples dinners.

Spend time with People ...

Well worth remembering. Like many others here I've lost my father and my mother suffers from a terrible neurological disorder that has robbed her of getting out of the house for errands, church, and family gatherings.
I hope he enjoys every step of the way.

Since I read your post a few days ago, I have shared it with several people. Yesterday, I had the opportunity to share it one more time, and I think (hope) that my young listener understood, and will heed to the advice.

Thank you for posting!

While I think there is a lot of wisdom in not losing human interaction, I find quite a bit of irony in that this is being posted in a virtual community.

The trick is to use them to enrich your life rather than isolate you.

For example, I live 350 miles from my grand niece, but I keep up with her gymnastics on FB...at the same time as other relatives all over the country. That would never happen without an asynchronous, multicast medium.

This is the first time I've seen this post. I thought the older generation, (I'm 58), had life ass-backward, but after reading the OP and giving it some thought, I think maybe "we" are the ones going about life the wrong way.

I’ve been doing online banking for at least ten years. Back then they did not open late and I worked unpredictable hours. I’ve started going into banks because I took over finances for my elderly parent.
If it wasn’t for that I wouldn’t step in. Most brick and mortar stores including banks are always looking to sell you something you don’t want. alway asking for your personal info. “Can I have phone number, email , they want donations etc.

Never had that problem at my bank. Everybody there knows us and my employees and family. Never been asked for anything. Just pleasant conversation.

I have seen in person the message in the original post. On the flip side alot of us old farts have developed friendships at the range or in the field hunting. But we also have developed friendships on the web. I have never met Butch Lambert in person but over the last 15 years we have read each others post, emailed, text, called each other many times. I have met one of his sons and grandson. I have talked to his lovely wife many times. We have common interest, values. He has shared tools with me which I consider an high honor. I hope to one day meet Butch in person. Until then I will still consider him a friend.

Things today can be a little more complicated for some. The Dodd/Franks thing has favored large corporations instead of small town banks so many of them have been taken over. In the small town we used to live our bank changed hands at least three times and one of the owners was a wealthy German that had virtually no ties to this country other than his holdings. I still went there because I knew most of the tellers but eventually that changed.

It is wonderful to hear that some can enjoy the small town atmosphere that we enjoyed in my youth. It is fast becoming a thing of the past. Many establishments will not accept checks and favor plastic which of course we pay more for.

Truth tell I haven't been in the door of our bank here as it is between two one way streets and has a postage stamp parking lot and a huge drive through.

I'm different. I bank with BofA and they never have enough tellers . I don't want to go in the bank and waste 10-15 minutes waiting to give them my money or get some. They sit there punching their computers and always say. "you know Mr. P#### with your savings balance you could open up a blah, blah blah. Just let me out of there! So, for me the ATM is the only friend I need at the bank. Now, wondering around a sporting goods or car parts stores is a completely different story!

Bank of America is the worst! We opened a new account with them after our old bank got bought out for the third time in two years. Ya wait forever for a teller that isn't educated enough to do a split deposit. That and other issues with their management caused us to move to M&T after 2 months.

The only reason I pit up with them is because they are in just about every city in the country. I have moved several times since I retired and at my age it's piece of mind too not have to worry about having my monthly annuities hung up in who knows where.

We always used the old original local small town bank. But now after several name changes and the core bankers leaving to start another bank, the service has deteriorated. Hidden charges, reluctance to release cash, cold inpersonable tellers, trying to give opinion when it is unasked and obviously incorrect, drive through tellers takes forever, on and on. They even charged to simply notarize a document. And yes my deposits are more than substantial. The name should have been a clue, Austin Bank. I think it's time to tranfer to the new bank. Where everyone knows your name. And it isn't so wierd.

Did BofA continue with the teller costs/charge? Here in Florida they started hitting us for .50 each time we talked to a teller. I left them at the $1.50 mark so don't know if it continued or not.

Everything in life is some sort of compromise. I enjoy and use both means of access and interchange. Make your choices intelligently and deal with them.
