thoughts on a new target varmint rifle

after many years of varmint and target shooting, mainly shot all Savages, so i am looking for another new 223 heavy varmint rifle, i like the new Savage LRPV rifles but they seemed to have priced them selves out of my range, so looking for some input of shooters who own or have shot the new gen 2 Remington 5R or the Remington PSS

thanks

Don't overlook the 700 Varmint ADL.....available on sale at times under $400.

  1. Replace the trigger with your preference.
  2. Replace the included scope with your preference.
  3. Fill the voids in the forearm with epoxy/shot or epoxy/micro-balloon mixture depending on your weight preference to stiffen the forearm. You can also fill the buttstock with shot alone to end up with a 17 pound rifle.
  4. Bed the action in Devcon or Marine-tex free floating the barrel with plenty of clearance. No need to add pillars, the stock is plenty strong to withstand compression
My experience is you should end up with a consistent .500-.750 rifle with the factory barrel and lug......maybe a shade better with a good load. Not good by BR standards but definitely good enough for the PD wars.

I'd also re-barrel the Savage and change calibers to a 20VT.....it would probably become your favorite.

another +1 on a barrel replacement for one of your existing savages.

you won't be able to buy anything from remington (factory) that will outshoot a custom barrel on a proven savage platform.

I'm not a savage guy, I simply don't care for them. but I've witnessed enough success to comment.

You will likely be disappointed with most new Remington's with factory barrels. As noted above, new barrels on existing Savages can be awesome. New Savages with factory barrels can also be awesome if you need an additional horse in the stable.

But for factory accuracy at a given price point, Savage has been a better bet than Remington for a very long time.

I'll go with ricco and rick on the 20 VT. I shoot varmints for money. For years I used a Rem. 700 in .17 Fireball with 20g V-Max. This year I was so busy I ran out of ammo and had to switch to my CZ chambered in 20VT with 32g Z-Max. May have become my new favorite round. That 32g hits like the hammer of God! Very impressive. dedogs

If you look at Remington's site you will find that the 5R gen 2 is not available in 223, ... smallest cal available is 6.5 Creedmoor. I did just recently receive one of those in that chambering but have not had the time to get out and give it a whirl so to speak. But I do have the stainless 5R in both the 223 and 308 (9T and 11.25T respectively) and am happy with both off them.

I presume you really meant SPS and not PSS (typo?) and if so, I would presume that one would be buying it for the action really as the stock is tupperware, unlike the 5R cousins. I had picked up a 204 SPS Varmint the other year and ordered myself an HS Precision stock (similar to the 5R stocks) as a replacement. Huge improvement. I also noted that the finishing and feel of the bolts/action is vastly different from the 5R compared to the SPS, the 5R is much better.

hello Jackal

i did mean the Rem 700 PSS in 223 26" black action and barrel with the HS precision stock my buddy has one and i am impressed with the way it shoots, he put a jewel trigger, 75 amax 25gr Tac. i believe the PSS stands for police sniper special, not interested in the sps

ah yes the 700P ....http://www.remingtonle.com/rifles/700p.htm looks interesting.
a separate website from their usual stuff :)

I third, perhaps even fourth the recommendation of just a rebarrel. I bought a Shilen from Midway and it shoot very well.

There are still some new leftover Remington XCR’s in (discontinued) .223 out there. Rem. #84460: B&C hook stock, 26” fluted heavy barrel, TriNyte coating....
A used one recently sold on another site’s classifieds, and the target the seller showed with it looked good.

I'm in the process now of rebarreling one of my Savage 10T models from 6.5 Creedmoor to a long time favorite,... 22-250. Bought a factory Savage fluted stainless heavy 26 inch barrel for the project. Going to the 22-250 will let me keep and shoot all my .223 bullets in a way better round.

Recently bought a REM 700 ADL $500.. Terrible tupper ware stock. Difficult to glass bed. Very little contact area and big openings to fill. Put a Kreiger 6RX barrel on it and it shoots under 1/2" without altering the stock. The stock touched the full length of the barrel. I removed a lot of plastic. Skim glass bed next. Had to use a wood chisel and remove a lot of plastic to install a Jewell trigger. I have not shot it since altering the stock.
