Third Attempt AT A Mile

Old Navy

Gold $$ Contributor
Just got back from the best range session this year. I am seriously under gunned for a mile but for now I had to shoot the biggest I have. This was my third attempt. First time out back in May I didn't have enough elevation for the range. Second time out I had a gusty wind at the target from 90 degrees I didn't have at the bench. Today was almost perfect conditions. No wind, sun over my shoulder and just a slight boil. I really thought I had good sight dope but that turned out to be a slight error. I started off wasting my best loads getting on the target. When I finally got where I wanted to be I was down to four rounds. Live and learn. I thought I would share the target photo with guys that can appreciate how hard this was to do. At 77 a lot of things are getting harder to do. The second photo shows oblong holes. My load dropped out of warp speed around 1675.

I couldn't have done this or shot any other good groups without the help of all the great shooters that hang out here. There is always someone here willing to help. Thanks to all.
Sound to me, that you are doing way better then us who are sitting at home thinking about shooting out to a mile! Never thought I'd have to kneel down to a Navy Cat but you are the man!!!! Did you use the 6.5x47?
Great job!!!

I uses the 6.5X47L. No kneeling down necessary. Thanks for your service.

Nice shoot'n Tex! ;)

And you are in no way, undergunned.
I know people that do the mile with the 6mm & 6.5mm Grendel.
One person is wanting to attempt 2 miles with their 6.5 Grendel when the weather cooperates.

Outstanding! My first go at a mile with a 300WM was a disaster. Been out 3 more times and it was a blast! 3 second flight times! LOL

It is fun. I have a Long Shot camera system. I can shoot and watch the bullet hit. I just increased the throat on mine to shoot the 147 ELD-M and keep the heal out of the donut. Anxious to see whether or not I screwed up or helped. If I ruined my it, the next barrel will be a .300 Win Mag. On a side note: My bullet holes were slightly oblong-ed. I thought it was from the bullet running out of steam. After rechecking the target a few days back I decided the bullets were coming in like a mortar. Think I will tip the target back this spring to help get the on paper easier.

That would be great! what's the range on those? I guess at least a mile, right? LOL

I'm running 208 Amax 3050fps 30" tube. Can see and hear the hits. Couldn't hear the hits with 6.5PRC.

I think you are correct. Though, I see the oblong is not always straight at the 12 o'clock on each shot. I really think you might be at the cusp of dropping out of warp. I just shoot steel. I'll post pics of my last couple trips at the mile on new thread. I'm hooked!

My camera is rated for two miles. I took it out for a test run when I first got it on a long stretch of straight road. I came down a hill at the end of the flat section and drove down two miles and set it up just like the video shows on The Long Shot site. Set the target up and shot ten .22 LR holes in it. Put the receiver on the dash of my truck and drove back two miles. The picture on my note pad looked just like it did at the target. I decided to drive up the hill and around a 90 degree turn and then another. I went over 2.2 miles and over a hill before loosing the signal. Needless to say I give this unit 5 stars.

I think my 142 SMKs came out of warp at 1600 or so.

I got a chuckle out of this, in a good way. You are *exactly* right. At a mile and out you are essentially lobbing mortar shells. It is educational to get a ballistic app like Strelok and check the drop at 25 and 50 yards either side of what your target distance is. I learned this the hard way when my shooting buddy and I (more me than he) were a bit slack in placing our 1,800 yard target, only to discover that a 25 or 50-yard error would have put us *feet* off point of aim and enough to miss the target over the top. Lesson learned. We got the distance right next time and have clearly marked the spot so we don't have to have to learn that lesson again :-)

It is hard to measure a mile that accurately. I am lucky here. The sections are surveyed probably to the foot. Two different land owners where I shoot and there is a fence on each end of the range. Also lucky that the wind is either in my face or over my shoulder. Only 62' elevation change also. Lookin forward to trying it again.

I am envious of your wind. We typically deal with 10-15mph at 30-60 degrees to the target from the right.. Gusty too. We put our own flags up at 1K and 2K but it's still a challenge.

I think it was the second time out I only hit the target one time near the last of my rounds. I had a wind flag at my bench and it was barely moving. When I got down to the target there was a gusting 5 to 7 at 90 degrees to the target. There is no road between the bench and the target. Have to go a half mile east, north and west to get to it. Had a wind flag at the target but it was out of camera view. Next time I am going to put it at the base of the target.
