Thinking of a caliber for my wife?

I would run either a 243, 7mm-08 or what my wife uses a short stocked ultra light AR-15 in 6.8 Remington SPC that I built with a polymer upper and lower and take off sporter 700 barrel in 270 that was recambered. I think the gun maybe weighs 5 lbs and it has no recoil at all. I used it on a TX hog a few months ago and worked like a charm.

I agree with other's the Rem 700 or Model 7 will work great! Also look into the savage 11 FHNS. It comes with the Accustock and accutigger. Mounted with a 4.5x 14x50 LR leupold. The savage with the accustock is very accurate out of the box. It has a 1 in 9.25 twist so it will handle up to 100gr bullets. The Leupold 4.5x14x50 will give her good magnification as well light transmission for low light shots. The 30mm tube really helps with light transmission. As well the 14 power will give her a good look at her target at 200yrds easily!

243WIN with a Limbsaver Recoil pad. If you handload, you could use an 87gr Sierra with a lighter load. Will still kill the deer very dead and have hardly any recoil at all.

Alright guys, I think i have almost nocked this one out.

So, last Wednesday, My wife and I were at the range and a friend I know from back in the day was there. He was shooting a .243 that his father handed down to him, all I have to say is, I was literally out of money from my wife not being able to put that rifle down. She was in love and I have to say Im pretty intrigued by the caliber also. So her mind was made for a .243.

Went to the gun dealer today and she tried probably 10 diferent ones out for size and weight. She is kinda of like me she like's more of a heavier gun so that in mind she has narrowed it down to three different choice's.

(Not in any particular order)

1. Remington 700 VLS .243
2. Savage 12 VLP DBM .243
3. Ruger 77 MARK II Target .243

Which one would you prefer out of those 3 and why?

Remington 700! Why?...Because it's a Remington!

That's the short answer, the long answer is they have the most aftermarket support of all rifles, any gunsmith will work on it, alot of custom actions are based on the Remington 700, and they got it right the first time, the 700 action has remained virtually unchanged since day one. Very accurate out of the box too!

Get the Remington, the only time you'll wish you had a "Salvage" or a Ruger is at a knife fight! ;D

X3MHunter is right! Although I don't share his same dedication to Remington as him. He is absolutely right about the Rem 700's. Remington does have more available access to aftermarket parts. Savage are fine rifles as well. Very Accurate out of the box. usually cheaper in cost. From what I have read SSS is very good at working on Savage rifles. Ruger's well....... I have had two of the M77 mark II. One in 220 swift, one in 308. Again for hunting both were plenty accurate. I still have the 220 swift. With Ruger I found that aftermarket parts are far few an in between. I don't like the scope mounting system with Ruger's Receiver's. They can give you problem's with windage and elevation in your optic's. There is a fix for that witch is the Burris Zee rings, but me personally I just don't like to have to deal with it. With that said Ruger does serve as a good hunting rifle. Not so much for long range tho. (500+ yards)

If it was me. I would walk right by the Ruger put a 700, and a Savage side by side look at my wife and say those are your choices. Witch one do you want or like the best! Again I'm not dedicated to either. Both have advantages over one of another. When one is looking for a hunting rifle, "not a competition rifle"! That would be another topic and great debate that I don't care to argue with either side (Rem Fans, or Savage Fans)

Rem. 700, pre-millenium (before 2000). 260 if you can find one, or the ultimate a .250 Classic, if not .243 will work. 4x scope max.
If you have your wife do the pushing (driving, whatever) for you through swaps and briers than go with a Model 7 so's she don't get hung up in the brush.....she'll thank you for it.

I have to think that everyone who responded already knows you and your wife and where you live. I say this because where you live may have a little bearing on what caliber you and Mrs. decide on. For instance, in Michigan you cannot hunt white tail deer with a .223; you must use something larger than that. No one has mentioned that the configuration of the stock has somethijng to say about perceived recoil. The angle of the butt stock will bring the gun back and up and not all into your shoulder. There is more to it than meets the eye. And now for the last item; you haven't included a picture of your wife with the rifle you may or not buy.
