The whats what on groups

More than 99.99% want to know about shot statistics. A number of the topics begin with "if we assume shots are normally distributed, then..."

While the oldest reference begins with " the distribution is unknown, so evaluate options..."

Bottom line is when EVERYTHING is behaving normally, groups and scores will vary to some degree, which the shooter needs to understand to make sound decisions. Then the wind blows.

PS I can find the inference for 30% CV, in a very specific incidence!

Something I've seen is that people take things posted above by Brian, and then they add their own assumptions to it.

One result I have heard many say is that nodes do NOT exist and you can use any powder charge you want and with seating depth you will get it to be just as good as any other powder charge with some seating depth
With all due respect, anyone who says that is either woefully ignorant, a complete idiot, or some combination. I have never heard of anyone who has competed in the precision sports who would agree with that.

In serious competition they are trying to get 5 -5 shot groups to average under 0.220"' 1/2" groups are a nice varmint hunting rifle. I doubt they consistently shoot 1/2". A lot of cherry picking.
Actually those who are serious are trying to stay under .200. In reality over the course of a match it does not happen very often. The spoiler usually is, "The Conditions". You can blather about this rifle, that rifle, tuning, statistical dispersion .......but if the shooter can't work within the conditions the rest does not matter.

I mean, mine do, but I’m pretty OCD, and I load ammo like I’m at the super shoot regardless of what’s it’s for. I killed a lot of varmints with a 1 MOA at best savage .204 in my early years, so I know little dots aren’t necessary, but I like to tinker and I put a lot of time into finding very forgiving loads.

I am not, by any means, saying they don’t sometimes shoot bigger than that. I’m just saying the good groups are the norm for sure.

Equipment is better than ever and knowledge is shared more freely than ever. I think it’s time that we adjust our perception of what’s boastful BS and what’s truly possible. I’ve got a good smith and good equipment, and this day in age I’m really not impressed by a 1/2 moa varmint gun. It’s acceptable, but not impressive by any means.
