neewbie needs help with equipment.

I currently have a remington 700p in .223 that im going to convert to 6mmbr. i plan to get a pac-nor 28-30" barrel 1-8 twist with a .272 noturn neck. will be used for a prone varmit silloette match at distances from 200-500 meters. plan to shoot ~90 grain bullets. would someone please recommend a good afordable press, powder measure and what dies I'll need? dont have alot of time for reloading so something thats quick and easy would be great. dont need .15 minute accuracy here. just something that will shoot through the wind better than my .223 thanks for any help!!!

You're going to need more than a new barrel if you want to convert from a 223 to a 6mmBR. They have different size bolt faces. You'd be better off starting off with a Remington rifle that was chambered in 243 or 308 if that's what you want to do. There's also more work to do to the magazine in a 223 than a 308 to get it to feed the 6mmBR. There is info on this site about magazine conversion in the Remington if you do a search.

Yes, you can get a gunsmith to mill out the bolt face and fit a new extractor but my preference would be to sell the 700P and start over. Better yet, keep both!

By the way, what ammo were you shooting in the 700P? If you don't handload, the best long range ammo is probably the Federal Gold Medal Match with the 69grn sierra matchking.

If you have only been shooting lightweight <55grn varmint loads in your 700P, you are yet to see the best that rifle can do at long range. It has a 1:9 twist and the 69grn SMK is a pretty decent bullet out of that rifle.

I am aware of the differant bolt face. im going to swap out the extractor for a sako stlye tubb extractor. and open up the bolt face. also going to swap out the handle for a longer target one.
I have been shooting black hills 68Gr moly bullets. right now the gun shoots 3/4 minute. which is what I hear it should. I really wanna try out the 6mmbr :)

A S/A bolt is on sale at Ebay.com

I thought about getting another bolt or stripping a cheep remington. but it would be much cheeper for me to put a 30dollar sako extractor on my bolt and rebarrel it. the action is in very good shape. the rare s/a bolts I've seen for sale all look pretty worn. I was more concerned with which type and brand of reloading dies I'll need. and what press people recomend for starting. I've heard mixed things about the harrols powder dispensors. I plan to load with varget.

Slappomatt, I'd try to find a good used Redding or Hornady single stage press that takes the 7/8th inch screw in dies. The last one I found on this or another forum was around $60. You will also need a powder measure. Redding, Hornady and RCBS all make excellent ones; again, try to find a used one. They should cost about the same. You will need some way to weigh your charges, a balance beam scale is fine, and an electronic scale is also fine,in my experience). As far as dies and brass go, you can get 6mmBR Norma Lapua brass from Sinclairs, Brunos, etc. It will need little prep. I use Redding's FL bushing sizer dies,I FL size every time) and a Wilson seater. But Redding at least makes a screw in die that will work fine also.

The "Shooters Corner" is a great place to look for used reloading equipment. However, you might need to call Bob after looking at his web page. Sometimes his list is not up to date on the little things, like dies and such.
