The ultimate 30 caliber long range hunting rig?????

+1 for the 300 wsm OR the win mag ( got both)
i have taken SEVERAL DEER in kansas over 900 yrds loading a 175 vld, and now i load the 210. the energy it retains is remarkable, as a berger unleashes 90% inside the vitals making instant, quick ethical kills even at lonnng ranges.
and recoil is manageable compared to a 338, and alot cheaper to reload for.
hell i just sold the ultimate long range gun- an amalite a/r .50 - shooting 647 gr monolithics at 2890 fps but at $5.00 per round it had to go.
dollar for dollar, with good barrell life, manageable recoil and a gun you can tote, the 300 wsm or the winmag is the top of the heap.

Minimizing wind and hitting an animal with enough velocity to open the bullet are the two components that I really want to work to control, I know at 1300 yards at 4500 ft elevation a Berger 215 launched from a 300 Wim mag at 3050 fps will open quite well on antelope which is about like hitting small whitetail, this resulted in very quick and clean kill.
A 30-338 Lapua AI built around the 230 Berger @ 3250 would be more of every thing that works so well with the 215 and 300 Win mag combo, less wind drift and more impact velocity with the big downer of barrel life but nitriding would be a very good addition. Personally barrel life is important, I don't intend to take an animal at range or in a condition that I've not spent time putting rounds down range at.

I've built 338 Lapua AI's that push a 300 gr Elite Hunter at 2980 fps in a 12.5 lb rifle that are built to hunt not just drag out of the truck, and they've proven effective and have taken elk out in the mile range and done it quick and clean, better than most guys do at a couple hundred yards with a 30-06!
Your trimming nearly 3/4 of an MOA of your wind vs the 30-338 Lapua at a 10 mph full value wind but at 1400 yards the 338 will struggle to open the bullet on deer size game.

My next one will be the 30-338 Lapua AI, I think its as little compromise as you can get to put a bullet on an animal that will open well at ELR. Thee best cold bore ELR shooters I know all run 338's and it's all about mitigating the wind and many rounds down range in every condition! There is a lot of us looking for what the 7mm 195 gr Elite Hunter will bring though ;)

There are many options that will get it done at those distances. Practice is key. There are no free lunches with long range shooting/hunting. I personally would go with a 338LM. When you buy components in bulk the cost is not that expensive to shoot. I know it was not the 30cal answer you want but the 338LM is the better choice.

The ethics group here are the ones are the ones who can not so you should not.

well... this thread went to crap

Dan,

I got as far as your post and thought......Wow, this didn`t take long to go sideways...... :o

I was hoping to learn something cool about big bore, big bullet long range combos, and if one or two are better than the rest.

338 lapua...

i just built one for long range hunting and shooting... im still in load development with it but 600 yards is a cake walk all day long. I wanted the bigger bullet for more energy at impact... 30 cals dont give what i want at long range like 1200+ yards... with that said.. i will only shoot at hogs that far away... even as good as my rig is so far i wouldnt shoot a deer at over 800 yards... if i had to shoot that far... likes been stated... you gotta get real good with the long shots... it takes a few years of good practice and lots of learning... and tons of money on tools to aid... like a kestrel and range finder... thats a must.... and they gotta be the good ones... then learn to read conditions too... reading the wind takes lots of time spent in the feild... lots more practice.... just be prepared... the long range game is fun but it takes a good while to get decent..

What`s it weigh, and what`s the kick like????

Phil.

Mine weighs 45 pounds and has a good brake. The recoil is nothing. I shoot it off a bench and it is made to reach out there. It's an Improved 338 Lapua and shoots a 300 Berger at 3000 plus. You could make a 20 pound and put a brake on it and it wouldn't be bad. When you get out there at 1200 plus I like the energy and being able to see the wash and hits. Matt

I use mostly round ones with holes that match my barrel. Mine have a chamber in them and they are like the ones that I use on my Br rigs. I believe they are like a Harrels. I heard the one that 406 Precision or JP custom makes is a good one or the slotted hole brakes. Matt

Thanks Matt,

I use the spiral Harrell`s brakes on my stuff and have enjoyed my business dealings with them.

I`m just not sure how effective they`d be on a Howitzer....... 8)
