The "Transition"!

The transformation from cylinder to Octagon in the steps performed. Here you go Mike. Fun stuff!
You talking to me??? HOT DAMN that's cool.
So, it'll be here in the morning? Huh, Huh???:D :D
As soon as it gets here, I've got another one for you to do your magic on.
Just too cool. Made my day and it's not even here yet. :)
Again Paul, you ARE the MAN!! ;):cool:
So, actual cut time is about how long and how far in front of the threaded chamber area does the Octagon start??? Just curious.

Octagon starts 5.1" from back of barrel and barrel is 24.750" total length. Machined beautifully!

I'll stick my nose in here.
Paul did mention that he can cut the Octagon on a barrel that is still mounted on an action? That sure would take some of the work and cost out of getting the Octagon done. No pulling barrels, getting the Octagon cut THEN figuring out how to set the head space and still have the flats come out looking right.
Think about it a bit. A round barrel can be chambered with no worries about it's position when mounted on an action. It gets chambered and the head space set as it's secured in the action.
Now with the Octagon, you want the flats to come out looking good. You sure don't want the flats to be cocked off center to one side or the other.
In my case, my round Savage barrels are chambered and the head space set. No issues with where it's positioned cause it's round.
For the Octagon cut, I just center punched and marked the 6 o clock position before I broke the nut loose. That will be the bottom flat and it screws back into position and still hits the proper head space position. And the center punch mark will be on the bottom and not seen when it's in the stock. If it ended up top, you probably wouldn't notice it.
And being that it's a Savage, I can tweak the brass to fit the head space position as needed. And none of my rigs will chamber factory loaded ammo so the head space setting in what I make it. (on the snug side) No SAAMI specs to think about.
Lots of Octagon barrels on muzzle loaders and no issues with head space.
Center fire head space and flat position is the issue. Planning ahead is your best move.
Did a lot of thinking before I went Octagon. Thinking I will be VERY PLEASED, enough that my next one will be on it's way soon. ;):D

This Guy Paul the "boltfluter" knows what he's doing. Does FIRST CLASS work. Turn around time? I know I'am not the only guy in town so no real hurry on my end. Just send it and see it when it comes back.
Took maybe 3 or 4 + weeks (?) including shipping time from Oregon to California. A little more or a little less. Depending on his work loads. Me? Get to it when you can and Thank You in advance. Plan ahead. He's a gun smith, expect delays.
Sent in a Pac-Nor SS straight pipe, 22" long in 22 BR. Got back this beauty!!

Mounted on a Joel Russo A5L stock, (A5 design in laminated wood) Was looking at two tone blue but got this instead. "San Francisco Camo". Saw it on the WWW before it got sent to me so everybody knew about it before me. :( I've learned to live with that. ;) Gets LOTS of looks.
Savage 16 SA repeater in SS, set up as a single shot, tactical bolt handle (more leverage = easier bolt lift) fluted bolt body, (not by Paul. Didn't know about him at the time but I do NOW!! :D
Started life as a .204 Ruger but the factory stock and barrel got sold without ever firing a shot. I wanted the action for another build. :D
Strictly for bench shooting. Just switch the front bag to fit the forearm. A natural born bug hole shooter. And thanks to Paul, looking even better than expected.
Paul the "boltfluter" is THE MAN!! Thanks Paul.
