The "New .40S&W"

I have never understood this. No the 9mm is not as powerful as the .40S&W and people saying that "it's almost as powerful as the .40" now with the new powders and bullets out still doesn't make it as powerful, ... period.

I shoot steel plates from time to time and yes I take both a 9mm and a .40S&W when I do so. When a .40 hits a steel plate it slams it down hard, when a 9mm, (147gr) hits it, it goes down but clearly not as hard or as fast.

If you watch the news you will see reports of people being shot with a 9mm and then driving themselves to the hospital. Well what if they take that time to shoot at you again instead? I mean you didn't start this but you did have to defend yourself against this person and it's very likely you don't want them to keep trying to kill you after you were forced to shoot them in the first place.

The 9mm has it's place, but it's not the "the new .40S&W" and saying so to sell more ammo won't help you if that person keeps shooting at you when you are forced to defend yourself. You may want to think about that.

You may be misunderstanding or misinterpreting what "everybody" is saying.

What I understand is the bullet design and manufacturing has improved drastically. So much so that a 9mm is significantly more effective than it was 20, or even 10 years ago.

A 9mm is still less effective than a 40 with up to date bullets.

The increased demand for small, micro compact concealed carry pistols necessitated the need to go back to 9mm. Ensuing marketing saying "9mm is better than is used to be" sealed the deal. Was it "better"? Probably not. Small pistol sure is nice to carry though.
The Glock 19 is, the TOP Selling Pistol in America for, a Reason !
Shoot " Good", 124's or 147's and make, the First shot,.. "Count" !
And a "Double Tap", after,.. that !
The 10 MM is Fine in Bear Country but, I couldn't shoot mine, as "well" as, the Model 19 or, Mod 34 Glock's that, I now, own !
In a Pistol, GOOD Triggers,.. ARE, your Friend

Yup, and don't forget, that tactic is blowing the intruder through your front door! :o

Power Factor is bullet weight, times velocity, divided by 1000.
Minor is minimum 125pf, major is minimum 165pf.
.40 can easily reach major, where 9 has to be pushed hard to do so, preferably using a comp for safety.
Perceived recoil impulses can be tweaked by using different weight bullets, and powder burn rates, even at identical PF’s.
Any cartridge is better than none, shot placement being the most critical factor.

Here is another interesting statistic that I got from a reliable source.

When rolling up on a life-threatening situation, statistically, the first shot from a patrolman's service gun is right through the dash of his patrol vehicle. Naturally, it's not spoken about much.

Have carried a Glock G22 for about seven years now . I carry both Hornady Critical Duty 185gr round , or a nearly identical hand-load with the Hornady XTP bullet . I also have a 9mm Drop-in Barrel for it , and use the Hornady Critical Duty 124gr round , or a identical load with the XTP . Why ? Because after a conversation with a Arizona DPS Officer , when he found out what loads I was using , He just smiled , and said , "That is the same loads we carry", after we did a lot of testing for stopping power . Works for me !

Ive had a Glock model 21 for many years, but never a 1911. Bought one about 5 months ago but never shot it. That is my must do for this week. Maybe with one in each hand. I am sure the range master will have something to say about that, and I won't be "nice New York reload!"

Never loose sight of the fact that what you are tying to stop is the bad guys trigger finger. As stated above, shot placement is key. Dump a magazine of 9, .40, .45 and not hit the nervous system, he may die bleeding out and emptying his gun as he kills you.

I think there was study that showed a hit from a 9mm is for most purposes as effective as a hit from a 40 cal. And, that shooting a 9mm produced better accuracy from almost all shooters. I believe a 40 cal is much better to have as a sidearm than a 9 if a person is proficient w sidearm. I think it will slow down a bigger person better than a 9mm.

I had that gun. Powerful and a handful. No fun at all to practice with. Sold it and bought a Colt defender in .45 ACP.
I have a little Glock 27 in 40. I have no problem shooting it, but I’ve been shooting the 40 for years.

If you ask me the 45 acp is easier to handle than the 40SW. The 40 is a pretty high pressure round.
I agree with this statement above. The 40 is very snappy and harder for first round hits. My first pistol was a Glock 22 40 cal. Next was a Glock 27 , I was all in with the 40 cal. All law enforcement was interested in was the 40 in late 90 and early 2000. Knowing what I know now I can shoot my 45 better than my 40 and a 9mm even better. I would have never bought any 40 cal just 9, 45, and 10mm. My Glock 22 has a conversion barrel to 9mm and I love it.
