The Chinese Spy Balloon

I imagine that the spectrum of any emissions was monitored and maybe jammed.
Radar density would probably detect any "Heavy" objects being carried.
We won't be told want was watched or how.
The balloon wasn't in violation before it entered our airspace.
Once over the U.S. the chance that it was doing nothing but sensing and looking was pretty good.
The Weather Channel was probably keeping the Pentagon informed where it would be heading.
Our military (wimps) were likely betting that letting it fly was less dangerous than having it fall.
A gamble that lost them cred.
If it was a weapon and did anything offensive (other than offending us) then that would be an act of war and my Lockheed Martin stock would fly higher than that balloon.

Not without a high probability of international incident. Notice that much of its route was over international waters (no shoot zone) before passing briefly over the Aleutians, back into international waters, over Alaska and Canada before entering the continental United States. To conform to international law (which we all insist everyone else does too) that was a pretty small window of territorial water to shoot it down.
And you don’t think they had this chance beforehand?

Not sure why it matters now. I guess Xi gave them the "go-ahead" to shoot it down after they received all the data they needed.
That`s what I was thinking. They got what they wanted. And so did Joe. Mo` money to the druggie. With the tech available there won`t be anything to retrieve. Just more junk in the ocean. I`m going back to the Laugh for the Day thread. Belly laughs, beer and breasts. That`s more my speed. Jeff

Good point. Problem is there's not much choice anymore apart from doing without.

It's come down to doing without before. Difference is these days the rioters will burn everything when they can't get what they want for free.

Russia and China don't need to do anything now but be patient. The country is destroying itself.
I know. It seems like nothing can be done. Myself, I have realized I dont NEED much of the stuff you can only buy from china. I will just do without.

This is like watching MSNBC or CNN.

As soon as it went into the Alaska territory, it should have been dealt with. Unless Joe's already given that back to Russia. I really don't know. I don't watch much news anymore.

It definitely should have been shot down asap. It’s probably been transmitting data the whole time. What are the odds that Chi-Na would have ever been able to recover this thing if it was just innocently floating around as some believe.

I just finished up a long conversation with a family member that is recently retired Air Force and what he was involved in is something he won't even talk about, but I know it was something that had to do with intelligence gathering of some type.

He brought up a great point during our conversation about the decision to shoot it down when and where they did. They ended up shooting it down in an area that has a high military presence along the East coast and in very shallow waters versus where it could have been shot down in very remote and/or mountainous areas or over populated areas during its flight path so he assumes this decision was made many days ago just for the ease of recovering as much as they can in a more accessible area which if you think about it makes a lot of sense.

He thinks we probably knew about it even before it entered over Alaska but due to international laws and the remoteness of the waters in and around Alaska or over Alaska itself would create nightmares on recovery.

He also believes that the communications aspect of that balloon were being jammed or blocked pretty much the whole time. These are just a few thoughts some of you might want to take time to consider.

Taiwan is our problem. Many of the most critical products our economy and standard of living require rely on Taiwanese semiconductors.

"Taiwan is home to the Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company (NYSE:TSM), which is the world’s largest contract chip manufacturer both in terms of market capitalization (as of December 4th, 2022) and output. TSMC is often referred to by the Taiwanese as the ‘sacred mountain’ as the firm’s importance in global trade lends Taiwan a unique security advantage (and disadvantages as well). Taiwan is home to some of the most advanced chip-making facilities in the world, including the brand new 3-nanometer fabs that just entered production in the latter half of 2022."

And it's not just semiconductors. There's a huge amount of conventional industrial production there we rely on.

You can shrug your shoulders, but believe it - China conquering Taiwan would be a catastrophe for the US and the global economy.
