Never had any issues with the numerous Remington Model 700’s I have owned. The improvements described in this article will be interesting to watch.

Just for giggles , it is grease all over the bolt and the front ring on the bolt or are they that badly machined. I have looked at dozens of the latest CNC machined Remington's and none looked like that. If it is grease no biggie but just curious. I have owned older Rem 700's and much newer ones and only one had lousy extraction but still usable. I realize there is no comparison between a panda or the like between Remington stock receivers with no truing.

Flame away if you like but I cannot get onto the "bash the Remingtons" bandwagon just because everything isn't set perfect.

Apparently this all started because I said the Buds Guns 40x SINGLE SHOT (the one with the sight holes like a 40x) is better than a Walmart take apart.

I stand by my assertion.

Dusty is convinced they are all the same and come off "the same machine". Which is fine, maybe they do, neither one of us work at Remington, so his assumption is fine with me. This thread, I'm not sure the function or why I was tagged, the whole thing seems kind of talking about bolt handles not actions.

All in all, a 350 dollar action is not equal to a 1500 dollar custom action. Someone call the Wall Street Journal... we got a hot story.

Correct, but if you want it to shoot and function with similar consistency and accuracy as a custom action (as most people do when they use a 700 action for a rifle project) then you wont be far off from the time and money it would have taken to get a custom action in the first place.

Takes time and money for a gunsmith to tune, time, and true a 700. Might be $800-$900 into the cost of the action and all the work and it's still not as stout nor will it have as good of an ignition system as a custom.

But for just a straight factory action left the way they are, they are generally pretty good. If I received a new 700 action with faulty extraction timing, you wouldn't find me spending the time or money to fix it. That action would be in the mailbox the next day headed back to the vendor for a replacement.

A CNC machine does not "magically" produce correct parts! Its only as good as the operator running it..............And there is a lack of skilled machinists out in the work force.

So on top of bolt handle extraction timing:
The tenon threads are usually out of whack and need to be chased, receiver face is never square, the trigger timing is always off, poorly machined factory recoil lug needs to be replaced, firing pin raceway contacts the pin and creates inconsistent drag, the firing pin spring is poor quality and should be replaced for faster lock time, the bolt lugs almost never have more than 50% contact on the abutments, etc...

I never said the 700 was a piece of junk, nor did I say they cant make a good base for a very accurate rifle, BUT there is a LOT of room for improvement. Improvements to get it right take time and money

Not only do you have to have skilled workers, but the workers have to give a sh@@ about what they are doing.

Someone pointed out above that a chip in a CNC fixture will result in substandard product output. Who’s responsibility is it to find that chip? Clue, not the accountants.

You can buy a Wolff spring for about $10 or so. I've replaced a couple of the standard 24# springs with a 32 pounder!

The handles are cast. They have used the same mold and the same soldering fixture for many many years. It puts them in the same wrong spot every time

I’m poor and have to make do as best I can with what i can afford, if it’s Savage, Remington or Tikka etc. I don’t care as long as it shoots well.
I’m sure I’m not the only person either with this opinion.
I see all the impressive 10k rifles at the events and now big $$ hunting rifles and of course if your not buying them from a special smith or whom ever then your not in the click so to speak. Or I’ve heard this one
(you don’t get it) or how bout
(your not a serious competitor) I heard that one recently too.

I’d like to see more regular guys with regular rifles shoot well rather than this huge arms race, now I know the guys selling this stuff say competition drives innovation and I get that too.

I’ll tip my hat to the fellas that can afford it, for myself there’s a limit.
Maybe revise a Remington tuning thread or Savage timing thread or whatever

I know you’re exaggerating your dollar amount, but that 10k number gets thrown around a lot and it isn’t applicable for high end hunting rifles unless they are shooting real H&Hs or rigbys. You can have One of the best gunsmiths in the world spin you up a top dollar action and barrel and put it in a hand made wood stock by an actual master woodworker for half that.

You absolutely don’t need to spend that much money and I don’t mean to imply that you should. Just that I think people overstate how much others have into custom rigs.
