My wife ask me if she can go with me to look at the machine, if it is in good condition, what can we use it for and if it is a good buy. She even put in a Thompson Center black powder rifle she had won in a raffle to close a trade on a Reid Brothers surface grinder.
She and I grew up together in WV and she truly likes pretty much all thing mechanical including fast cars, motorcycles and firearms.
When she asks how much it cost, just point to her shoe collection and say, "A lot less than these!". Then, run for it! Lol!

Don't lie, but she doesn't need to be sober when you tell her. Make dinner, pop in her favorite movie, and keep her glass full of a good wine. A couple hours watching a cheesy movie and $40 bottle of wine gets you out of most bad situations. And if she still gets really mad it will throw her aim off.
I always talk to her before. She's very understanding and just wants to know two things: can we afford it? and why do you want/need it? It's the same for trucks, tools, guns. She asks when she wants something as well, but since I take care of the financial stuff, her question about can we afford it is not rhetorical.
Good policy.
When we got married she suggested an honor system, with a $300 limit. When I asked her, "Is that per month, per week, per hour?" (Software engineer in me). We settled on the current system. It's worked for 20 years and never had a fight about "stuff".

I believe that applies to machine tools too.
With my rifles i have a "stock" line. I generally build my guns from parts. When she asks "is that a new gun?" I tell her no its my old gun I just put a new stock on it so it looks different then it goes right into the gun safe. I have only "3 guns" but I got a lot of stocks!!!!!!!!

But in truth, I don't spend above a certain amount without talking to her. She does all the books and seldom objects, but sometimes prefers that I wait for a few days. Good idea because I often change my mind anyway!

Well, first thing you do is make sure your wife and family are squared away. Financially and otherwise.
Second thing you do is make sure there's a reasonable fairness as to what discretionary items get purchased.
Once those two things are there... you just do whatever your conscience tells you is alright. No need to ask permission. No need to consult with anyone. No need to ask forgiveness. Just a man doing what a man will do.

Being married for 58 years I can tell you none of this works. LOL we discuss before the purchase, then I buy it.

Local talk show host came up with what he called the "48 Hour Rule". It is a joke but it's fun. Wives know anyway just from us being big kids. Anyway, the rule goes like this: An item must be displayed in clear view for 48 hours. If it is noticed after that time period, your response can be "that old thing, I've had it a long time". Again, they know anyways. After using it a few times on my wife, my wife bought a sheared beaver coat for a princely sum and hung it on the back of the walk in closet door for more than a week before I noticed. She laughed and claimed the 48 hour rule.
