I'll confess...
I've taken an empty gun case "to the range".
Just happened to have a rifle in it when i got home.

I brought a fifle home on Friday evening.
Unfortunately, she was already home from work.
I showed her the new to me Browning A Bolt synthetic in 25 WSSM.
Told her it wasn't the rifle i was looking for, but was too good of a deal to pass up.
There were some looks. Mostly of the nonpleasant type.

When my wife sold her Corvette to a excavator contractor/friend of mine he hadn’t yet told his wife as of the day they arrived to pick it up. Well when he uncovered the car and asked her -whatcha think of your new car hun ? she looked dazed and even more so when all the cash was on the counter top, so much that we thought she might fall over and hit her head on the counter top.

How do you tell your wife you just brought at another machine for the home workshop . That's wasn't cheap at 6k ??

A . Do you tell her over dinner with the back door open for a quick escape .

B . Just put the machine in the workshop and when she asks about it you tell her have had that for years. Havnt you noticed it

BTW, my wife has nothing to do with my hobbies... shooting, hunting, fishing, or motorcycles.

She doesn't ask, I act as her free contractor for house upgrades. It works.

I feel the original intent by the OP was just for humor, I would hate to think I had to hide or lie to my wife about buying a gun or tool no matter the cost.

when I had my machine tools, they were mine and I paid for them, but my hubby got to use them. But I’m a bit of a special case…

it doesn’t have to be similar in cost, just something she wants. So just ask her.

This as a tricky situation you are in because you are basically doing a clean up on Isle 4. You are asking for forgiveness after the sin. I would apply the 24 hour rule here in your case. You have it in the house for over 24 hours, say next week of month and she asks about it, you say, oh that thing has been in my shop for a while now.

I did some thing like that once.... I dropped $5000 on a Honda Valkyrie that a guy was selling at a steal price without consulting the bride.... I told her I would make a lot of money when I sold it... she says "Then sell it..." Things were icy for the year I had that bike but I sold it for $7800 and paid off my son's orthodontics... We now have agreed that $1000 is my just buy it limit, over that I let her know and make sure there are no issues I am forgetting about that could use that cash.

We went out last month to look at compact 9mms for her.
She came home $945 poorer after buying it and a bunch of ammo.

Sold my boat last fall for a tidy profit after using it for 5-1/2 years.
Paid for half of her new car.
Bought her a Rim-X and scope.
Bought myself a rifle and scope and more projectiles.

She wanted ammo and 9mm dies for her birthday...

She's been insisting that I buy the CPS primer tool so my hands will stop hurting.

I got me a good one.
