Tell me about the 6mm BRA

I am thinking about building a 6mm BRA.

I've built and shot a few 6mm BR a couple of Dashers and I'm now thinking about the BRA.

I'm thinking 105 grain bullets or thereabout....

Whose barrel? What twist. What freebore? Whose dies? I really prefer JGS reamers...and service....

I'll be courteous and start an answer. Most answered will bring on some serious disagreements but I will start

What barrel maker? Heaven knows I will NOT answer that. Pick your favorite and deal with that.

Twist would be between 7 and 8" I like 7.5.

FB of .104" is my latest reamer with a .269" neck. Just clean the necks up to about .011" for that. You can do a .2705" neck and just uniform, which is close to a "no turn".

Alex Wheeler knows everything. Best to ask him and then try and deal with him for your build.

I liked my first BRA I had built two years ago so much I had another one built during this off-season. Sub inch five shot groups to inch and a half five shot groups at 500 yards is relatively easy to accomplish under reasonable shooting conditions.I have a Krieger barrel on one and a Bartlien on the other both 8 twist.Both are 17 pound guns with heavy varmint taper barrels.I do believe the free bore is .104,.269 neck and with a JGS reamer. It would be nice not to have to fire form brass but it sure is easy enough to do. After some experience with some of the larger caliber cartridges it sure is nice to sit down behind a 6 mm I do believe it has made me a better shooter although the bigger cartridges do have their place. So far no regrets with going with the BRA. I’ve had good luck with handmade Vapor Trail‘s and Berger 108’s. Alex Wheeler is certainly the go to man about this cartridge.

I sure wasn't fishing for disagreement, not in any way. All I was wanting was informed opinions, and I appreciate the two I have gotten.

I really like a .269 neck on a 6mm, enough to turn but doesn't seem to make it as fragile......or as much work....my 6ppc has a .269. My other Brs and Dashers are straight .272


I've used krieger, shilen, brux even Wilson in earlier builds.

I’ve got the .272” neck chamber in mine. Don’t feel like neck turning brass at all.

My barrel is a 1-7 twist. Gives me the option to shoot the 110gr bullets. The Hornady ATIP’s have been laser beams. They come out of the gun at an honest 2800+FPS. Think the average is 2822 and I’m not beating it up. Barrel length is 26”.

I rebuilt a 1970's Savage 112V single shot. Series J rifle. Was a 243WIN and the barrel was shot out . Don't like 243WIN anyways. Trued the receiver face, bolt face, pillar bedded the stock and aftermarket recoil lug that we double pinned to the receiver and adjusted the trigger.

Attached is a picture of a dummy round with the 110 seated in a case and a bullet next to it for reference so you can see approx. how much of the bullet is sitting in the case.

I won’t purport what is best, but JGS has Wheelers #2 reamer print on file, Whidden has dies to suit it, and Sinclair even has their top end seater available to fit it too.

Peterson or Lapua brass of course. Berger, Vapor Trail, Barts, Roy Hunter bullets between 103 and 106 grains have been winning...

Now dies sized to perfectly match your fired brass might get a little closer, it’s up to you.

I like the Br. Imp. because it simply makes great cases easy. And as far as freebore .120 is a good place to be, you can make it longer easy. the 105's work good in a 7.75 -8 twist at 2970-2998, the 110 A tips are good in a 7 - 7.75 twist from 2890 to 2920. Powder 105's H4895, RL-15 and I hear Varget. The heavies like H4895 to H4350 but you will need a drop tube. Barrels ? They all make good one's. ....... As far as accuracy it will shooting sub .1 groups at 100 yds. with ES as low as 1 and they are capable of 4" 10 shot groups at 1000 yds. and you don't get beat up doing it..... jim
